CFN – I’m not sure if Habs GM is really that smart or really really lucky? Either way he made a tremendous move in trading winger Jiri Sekac for Devante Smith Pelly.
In the deal he not only addressed a glaring Habs need, but he also resolved an issue and traded a cash pick up in Sekac for a former 2nd round draft pick in Smith Pelly without hurting his cap.
Sekac is a bit of an enigma. He has the tools for success but for whatever reason has not clicked in the Big Show. He may now get a chance to play with one of the best 1, 2 punches in the NHL.
Devante brings the smash that is missing with Alexei Emelin being hurt or in the dog house. He brings a big body to a small team. He doesn’t need to score 30 goals to have an impact. Heck, he can play 3rd line and have an impact. He’ll have opportunity though and is a better fit on line 1 than Dale Weise who has given his all this season and been victorious.
Bergevin did all this without giving up a long term asset or future one, and for a team that expects to be near the top akin to the Red Wings long time run near the top of the standings, asset management is crucial.

It was a trade of needs. The Ducks have a lot of grit and needed a finisher. The Habs needed to be bigger and now are.
If Smith Pelly can produce 20 goals per year and 200 hits he’s a great asset for the Habs current roster.
