Seniors Situation Room by Dawn Ford Community Paramedic Program Extended APRIL 26, 2016

When you aren’t looking for something, you never know what you might find. Happened to me when I was going through an old box of pictures and look what I found:

DF april 25 16 bIt is an old match box cover. It says on the side:’ Strike match on the back cover.’ From top to bottom it reads: ‘Where the Best People Go To Eat, SHIRLEY’S, J.J. MacDonald, Prop., Your Seaway Valley Restaurant, 44 Second St. West, Cornwall, ONT., Home Cooked Meals, Catering to Parties, etc., Inquire About Our Takeout Service, Phone 6907.’

We used to go to Shirley’s after school for a coke or snack and see the other kids there after school. We had a lot of fun at ‘Shirley’s’. It was THE meeting place in the 50′.

Good news that the Community Paramedic program in Cornwall SD&G has received another financial extension by our Provincial Government which enables our Paramedics to continue visiting some of our more vulnerable citizens. They work to prevent unnecessary emergency visits to the hospital by monitoring vital signs, mobility and medicines. They provide post discharge follow ups and provide social support as well. This helps to manage health conditions and maintain independence for the client.

Permanent funding would guarantee the continuation of this program which is so important for our community. Please contact our MPP Jim McDonell at 613-933-6513 or email at: jim.mcdonell@pc.ola.org and our City Councillors at: councillors@cornwall.ca to offer your support

For more information , contact Michelle McMillan, coordinator, at 613-930-2787, ext. 2178

A new seniors committee, named The Senior Friendly Community Plan Development Advisory Committee has been formed. The Project coordinator is Carmen Cousineau . The committee will work to make recommendations for our seniors in Cornwall. This is very important for our growing senior population and will help our community by identifying and recommending things which will enhance the lives of our seniors and their safety.

df april 25 16 cA very special guy just celebrated his 86th birthday recently , Ernie Appleton. Ernie is the volunteer gardener at the Beek Lindsay Seniors Residence. He has already been out in the yard raking old leaves and cleaning up on the warmer days we have had. He is anxious to start digging in the flower beds and pots and get them ready for planting flowers. He always makes the yard around the Residence look beautiful.

Happy Happy Birthday Ernie.

And another wonderful resident of Beek Lindsay will be having a birthday on May 6th. Edna May Dorey will be celebrating her 100th. birthday. She was born in 1916 in Alfred Township, Ontario. She began working in Prescott ON at Dr. Smelly’s home as a domestic and to care for his children.

DF april 25 16 1She met her husband, Royal Leonard Joseph Dorey in Prescott at Mary Spencer’s home and they married on New Year’s Eve in 1939.

She has 6 children: Charles, Ann (deceased), Phillip, Linda, Dorenda and David and has 9 Grand-children and 10 Great Grand children and step-Great grandchildren.

When Edna moved to Cornwall in 1940, she began attending Trinity Anglican Church on Second Street and has spent many hours in service to her beliefs and to the Church. She still enjoys attending the Craft Group and contributes her knitting, crocheting and craft talents to this group.

Edna lived in a number of different homes and always had gardens in most of them. In September 1987 she moved to Beek Lindsay Seniors Residence and although she misses the gardens, she is not sorry to have given them up.

Edna has dedicated her whole life to raising her children and babysitting many others. She loves her siblings, in-laws and children and is loved by all who have crossed her path. Some of her nieces and nephews (on the Dorey side) affectionately refer to her as ‘The Queen’ because of her tidy appearance and kindness.

James LadouceurThere will be an Open House on Saturday, May 7th, 2016 at the Ramada Inn. “100 years loved”. The Residents of Beek Lindsay will also be having a private party to celebrate Edna’s birthday.

Happy 100th. Birthday Edna

Here is a cute joke:

Two elderly gentlemen had been friends for many decades. Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week to play cards.

One day, they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said,” Now don’t get mad at me…I know we’ve been friends for a long time, but I just can’t think of your name! I’ve thought and thought but I can’t remember it. Please tell me what your name is…”

His friend stared at him for at least three minutes–he just stared and stared at him. Finally he said, “How soon do you need to know?”

Have a good week, and Happy Passover to all of our Jewish friends, and viewers!

Dawn
