Warnings

4:15 AM EDT Tuesday 09 August 2016
Heat Warning in effect for:

  • Cornwall – Lancaster
  • Maxville – Alexandria
  • Morrisburg – Long Sault
  • Winchester – Newington

Yet another heat wave on the way.

A hot and humid airmass will return from the United States beginning this afternoon, when afternoon temperatures are forecast to reach the low 30s. Humidex values will slowly rise to the mid 30s in most areas today.

The air mass will become considerably more humid tonight, which will keep overnight temperatures near 20 in most areas. Hot and humid conditions under partly to mostly sunny skies are expected Wednesday through Friday. Afternoon temperatures will reach the low to mid 30s, and early morning minimum temperatures may briefly reach the low 20s. The warm and muggy nights will not provide much of a break from the almost relentless heat, even in the odd location where temperatures may briefly dip to the upper teens shortly before sunrise.

Some relief from the daytime heat is possible in a few locales near the shorelines of the Great Lakes if a breeze off the lake develops.

Humidex values peaking in the upper thirties to low 40s are expected beginning Wednesday as well.

This may be the longest and most significant heat wave of the summer so far.

Latest indications suggest a weak cold front, along with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, may move through sometime Friday night. If this occurs as forecast, some relief from the heat and humidity will be expected in time for next weekend.

Frequently visit neighbours, friends and older family members, especially those who are chronically ill, to make sure that they are cool and hydrated.

Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day.

Never leave people or pets in your care inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight.

Prepare meals that don’t need to be cooked in your oven.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

It’s been a long hot dry Summer Hugger.

  3. Too long, too hot and too dry. Thank goodness for AC.

  4. For a few days now I haven’t been up to the mark with this heat and very dangerous for elderly and people with health issues. Hubby has the AC on in the living room and the rest of us are using fans and he also has a fan in the living room and it helps keep the moisture out. This is way too mjuch to tolerate.

Jules drink lots of water and if you can stay off the caffeine.

  6. We have no air conditioning in our house, but it’s not too bad. A nice rip on the motorbike followed by a few beers works fine for me. Four months from now, we’ll be freezing our asses off.

  7. Hi Jamie I can no longer walk a good distance in the heat and yesterday I was out with my daughter and got sick. I have only one coffee in the morning but my downfall are those ginger ales that I have to cut out you are right. I have water in front of me now and that is what i will stick with. My husband has the AC on low but it takes the humidity out of the air. Take care everyone this is bad

  8. Caffeine is not good for you. It has a half-life of 3 to 5 hours and affects a body for 8 to 14 hours. It is one of the things you should avoid in heat alerts.

  9. Hugger I sure am learning a valuable lesson on cafeine and I have water in front of me now. I slept for a short while this afternoon. Furtz if I got on a motor bike I would look more like what Phillis Diller did in a movie with Bob Hope and the German actress “Boy Did I Get A Wrong Number” LOL LOL. ROLF! I would be a site for sore eyes. That would really cause quite a pile up on the roads.

  10. My daughter is suffering through this heat wave because of her thyroid and my husband told her the same thing that Furtz just said about us freezing our asses off soon which is true. Usually when we have a hot and dry summer like what we have then we get hit with tons of snow and cold. You are right Furtz that may be on the horizon.
