Toronto Police Cst Vincent Bonazza Sexual Assault Charge After SUI Investigation SEPT 16, 2016

Toronto Police Service Officer Charged with Sexual Assault

Case Number: 16-TSA-013

Mississauga (16 September, 2016) —

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Tony Loparco, has caused a charge to be laid against a police officer with the Toronto Police Service.
As a result of an SIU investigation, Director Loparco has reasonable grounds to believe that in September 2008, the police officer committed the criminal offence ofsexual assault against a 28-year-old woman. This matter was brought to the SIU’s attention in January of 2016.
Toronto Police Service Constable Vincent Bonazza is now facing a charge of sexual assault, contrary to s. 271 of the Criminal Code of Canada.
The police officer is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 1000 Finch Avenue West in Toronto on October 26, 2016.
The matter is now properly before the courts. In consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will make no further comment.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
