Family Member Arrested after Officers Confronted over Vehicle Stop

16-36158

A 47-year-old local man who disagreed with driving tickets given to his adult nephew made the poor choice of later confronting, yelling and swearing at police officers.

At approximately 8:45 a.m. on November 26, 2016, two Kingston Police uniform patrol officers were parked beside each other writing their statements and report from a prior incident when they were interrupted by a red Honda Prelude accelerating at Macdonnell Street and South Bartlett Street, where the driver was deliberately spinning his tires across the entire intersection and into a parking lot. The engine was accelerating at full throttle and the vehicle was equipped with an after-market exhaust, making the incident extremely loud and reckless in the officers’ opinions. They also noticed a local business owner exit the store and even yell at the vehicle because of the purposeful noise.

The vehicle was stopped by the officers and the 22-year-old local driver was issued two Highway Traffic Act tickets for unnecessary noise and having an expired validation tag on his licence plate.

The officers returned to the parking lot off of Macdonnell Street to complete their prior report when at approximately 9:15 a.m. the 47-year-old uncle of the driver approached and began yelling, swearing and using derogatory names towards them. The officers attempted to explain the driver was an adult and the man should speak to him regarding the police contact and the proper way to dispute a ticket in court. However, the man continued to yell obscenities at the officers and at that time was placed under arrest for causing a disturbance. He was transported to police headquarters, processed and later released on a Promise to Appear with a future court date.

Man Arrested for Smashing Vehicle Windows and Stealing Contents

16-35488

A 33-year-old local man is facing numerous charges after he was caught on video breaking into multiple vehicles in an underground parking garage.

During the evening of November 18 and morning of November 19, 2016, the accused was able to sneak into and gain access to the underground parking garage of an apartment building located on Leroy Grant Drive. Four vehicles had their windows smashed and visible property such as a laptop, GPS device, and expensive jackets and sunglasses were stolen.

After reviewing video surveillance of the building and garage Kingston Police were able to positively identify the accused and uniform patrol officers were advised that reasonable grounds existed to arrest him if seen.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. on November 27 a patrol officer observed and arrested the accused, 33-year-old Jonathan C. HOOD, in the area of Princess Street and Victoria Street. Found in his possession was a cheque and a credit card made out to two different men. A follow-up revealed both men had their vehicle windows smashed in between November 20 and 25, with these items, plus still unaccounted for property, stolen.

The accused was transported to police headquarters, held overnight, and was later remanded into custody following his bail hearing on November 28. He is facing four counts of mischief, four counts of theft, two counts of possession of stolen property and six counts of breach of probation.

Especially during the holiday season with gifts being purchased Kingston Police cannot stress enough to lock one’s vehicles, remove all valuables as soon as possible, and hide from plain view any other items that would draw the interest of thieves. This can even include small items like loose change and charge cords or mounts for electronic devices.

Woman Charged with Assaulting her Common-Law Partner on Numerous Occasions

16-36366

A 33-year-old local woman is facing assault charges against her domestic partner that spanned multiple instances in the latter half of the year.

At approximately 7:00 p.m. on November 28, 2016, the 32-year-old victim attended the front desk of the Kingston Police station to report occurrences that had happened to him both recently and back in summer.

Beginning in July of 2016 the couple got into an argument that resulted in the woman tossing the man’s clothing out on the front lawn of their west-end residence. When the victim attempted to put his clothing back into the bedroom dresser the accused began kicking and punching at him. While struggling the woman pulled on the man’s hand, causing a snapping sound. The victim left the house and at that time he noticed he had a bloody nose and swollen hand, which was later confirmed by medical personnel to have a broken bone. This incident was not initially reported to police.

Then on November 27, 2016, the couple got into another argument which resulted in the woman repeatedly punching the man’s chest. The following day, on November 28, the victim received multiple text messages while at work from the accused threatening to discard his property. When he returned home another argument ensued and the woman began throwing children’s toys and a television remote at the victim, the latter barely missing his head. It was after this incident the victim attended the police station to report all of the occurrences.

Kingston Police uniform patrol officers first spoke to the victim and then attended their residence to continue the investigation. Evidence was seized at the house and photos taken by the victim of his injuries from July were provided to the officers. The accused was arrested at the residence and held overnight to attend a bail hearing the following day. She is facing charges of assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, and assault in relation to the multiple instances.
