Seniors Situation Room by Dawn Ford – Brenda Connelly ARTIST Jan 25, 2017

Cornwall has a lot of wonderful and talented artists. Brenda Connelly is one of them. She has painted in oils and watercolour but acrylics are her preference at this time. Some years ago when Jean McCormick had her Art Studio on Pitt Street north, Brenda attended the studio for classes. Jean’s daughter Bonnie taught Brenda and a lot of us over the years. Brenda remembers that we were also able to buy our art supplies at the studio as well as having framing done, which was a big help.

Brenda is a friendly and pleasant lady who is a pleasure to meet. She loves her painting hobby and says,” Art is a creative pastime that relaxes and is challenging at the same time. And the results make it all worthwhile.”We wish her many more years of enjoyment and creativity.

Above is a lovely photo of Brenda with one of her beautiful paintings of a lady with her two white dogs:

A friend of mine, Fran Irwin, sent me this poem titled,

‘So True It Hurts’

Another year has passed and we’re all a little older.

Last summer felt hotter and winter seems much colder.

There was a time not long ago when life was quite a blast.

Now I fully understand about living in the past.

We used to go to weddings, football games and lunches.

Now we go to funeral homes and after-funeral brunches.

We used to have hangovers from parties that were gay.

Now we suffer body aches and while the night away.

We used to go out dining and couldn’t get our fill.

Now we ask for doggie bags, come home and take a pill.

We used to travel to places near and far,

Now we get sore asses from riding in a car.

We used to go to nightclubs and drink a little booze.

Now we stay home at night and watch the evening news.

That is how life is and now my tale is told.

So enjoy each day and live it up..before you get too damned old.

By Author Unknown who seems to write a lot of poems.

I don’t care what they say, this cat, Tiger Boy, likes to sit on my head..especially at 5am.He had stopped doing it for awhile because I yelled at him a few times, probably. He seemed to prefer to just rub his whiskers on my face and poke me to wake me up to feed him. He didn’t get into as much trouble that way. He’s now back to the head- sitting to get the job done. What a photo that would make!! What a joy at 5am when I am sound asleep. What a cat!! Anybody want a friendly pussycat? Very friendly at 5am. Good alarm clock!!

In the Disabled World (Jan. 18) newsletter is an article about a study that was conducted on the benefits of armchair yoga for osteoarthritis. It states that osteoarthritis is the leading cause of long-term disability in older adults giving an estimate from the World Health Organization of about 10 percent of men and 18 percent of women worldwide.

The study was conducted at Florida Atlantic University where 131 older adults attended a 45 minute session of “Sit ‘N’ Fit Chair Yoga, which had been developed by Kristine Lee. The sessions were twice a week for 8 weeks. During the sessions it was noted that there had been a reduction in fatigue and improvement in gait speed, according to the article. Another group participated in a health education program. The conclusions three months after the end of the yoga sessions were a greater reduction in pain and pain interference in the daily activities of the participants.

Here is a cute joke:

Bubba and Earl are quietly sitting in a boat fishing, chewing tobacco and drinking beer when suddenly Bubba says,”Think I ‘m gonna divorce the wife. She ain’t spoke to me in two months.”

Earl spits overboard, takes a long sip of beer and says, “Better think it over…women like that are hard to find.”

Have a good week, Dawn
