Cornwall Ontario – Oddly enough we media types read our competition, even minor competition,  and that’s why it’s utterly astounding to read words quoted from Angela Vinet, the Exec Director of Sexual Assault Support Services in Cornwall.

Vinet is hopeful the movement will be a catalyst for greater change, allowing women to feel safer in their daily lives. While, unfortunately, things like catcalling and unwanted physical advances have become normalized in our society, women should feel comfortable speaking out against this kind of harassment.

“If someone’s acting inappropriately, it’s okay to call them out on it,” said Vinet. “We should feel more comfortable in standing up in those moments.”

The victim spoke out, came to the media even, and shared not only herself, but evidence of what occurred, yet Ms Vinet not only stayed silent, but allowed Adam to participate in her event.

Oddly enough Ms Vinet boycotts this newspaper even though we have consistently had more female voices and writers than any other media in this community including our multi year sponsorship of The Vagina Monologues.    As I write this column we now have four female columnists at CFN as well as two contributors compared to only two men.
When we wrote the original piece she responded by not responding:
CFN spoke with Angela Vinet of SASS, the group that the event was for, who said that she’d read the article and would distance herself from the story although she did send an email afterwords distancing herself from her distancing comment.  Nearly 24 hours later she still has not responded to our request for an email statement.

Surely any director of an agency meant to protect victims of sexual assault and abuse should be the first to condemn such behavior, nevermind allow the abuser to participate in their events knowingly,  should be condemned herself.

  1. Slightly off topic, but the township of Leeds and Thousand Islands solved it’s workplace harassment problem by suspending and firing the employees who reported it. It was reported in the local papers and on Kingston TV news, but it’s all pretty hush-hush right now.
