The Power of Beauty by Julie Bilotta – Tips to Keep Your Blonde Hair Fresh 122017

Cornwall Ontario – Tips and tricks to keep your blonde hair fresh

So as a lot of you may know I recently went from black hair to a platinum balayage.  I’ve been blonde in the past but that was about 10 years ago and I don’t remember it being as high maintenance as it is now.

All you blonde bombshells definitely know the struggle especially if you’ve gone from black or red to blonde so after trying different products and different hair related treatments I thought I’d share what works best with all of you!

First of all I would never recommend bleaching your own hair at home especially if you have black hair or red because they tend to turn orange with bleach so it’s always best to go to a hair dresser and have it done professionally.

Now some of my best friends who have gorgeous all blonde hair do bleach their roots which isn’t really a big deal to do at home because it’s a small area but remember to always use a toner afterwards so that your blonde is all one colour.

Toner is not going to lighten your hair it will only change the tone of it. If you have ombré hair or balayage and want to tone your hair at home don’t stress if you get the toner on your other shades because it won’t change the colour because colour doesn’t lift colour unless you’re using a developer with bleach then you’ll have to be extra careful but if you have the blonde you wanted then avoid using anymore bleach it’s just going to damage your hair.

It’s recommended to tone your hair about every 4-6 weeks depending on how long your toner lasts. You’ll know when it’s time because you’ll start to see the brassiness and yellow tones of your hair so that’s when you’ll want to pick up a toner.

This is easily done at home or you can pick out your favourite toner shade and 10-20 volume developer. I like to leave it on for about 40-60 minutes to get that vibrant blonde.

I really enjoy the Wella T-18 which is the lightest ash blonde but it’s really up to your preference. Now this is a major key to keeping the brass out of your hair. Make sure you’re using a purple shampoo and conditioner.

My favourite is the Blond Brilliance.  It’s affordable and works so well but because it’s so powerful you’ll only want to leave the shampoo on 2-3 minutes and follow with the conditioner for the same amount of time any longer and you’ll get a lilac shade in your hair but if that happens don’t freak out because it’s not permanent.

If you have yellow tones in your hair you’ll want to use purple shampoo if you have more orange go with blue shampoo.  They both work as toners to cut those unwanted shades out of your hair. Make sure to use a good hair mask once a week to replenish your hair and to keep it silky smooth and healthy.

I personally love using Morrocan oil light made for blonde hair after I towel dry my hair it keeps it so shiny and healthy and is also a heat protectant for when you’re using any kind of hot tools in your hair.

Another great trick to do about once a month is to chelate your hair and what that does is removes any stains in the hair you might have from leaving your purple shampoo in too long and also to remove buildup it’s also great to do the night before going to a salon to bleach your hair because it opens your hair up to really let the product work it’s magic.

So to do this all you’ll need is Dawn dish soap and it has to be the blue one and a whole lemon. First you’ll rinse your hair with water and then take a few drops of Dawn and wash your hair with it after that’s rinsed out take half the lemon and squeeze it through your roots take other half and squeeze through the rest of your hair massage it in and let it sit for 5 minutes once you rinse your hair it’s not going to feel nice but that’s fine,  don’t panic,  follow with a hair mask for about 5 minutes and then rinse with cold water to close your cuticles. Your hair will be so soft and silky.

And last but not least get yourself a boar bristles maple wood brush also available at Sally’s they actually help with hair growth and they distribute your natural oils coating your hair leaving it super shiny!

I just want to mention I am not a hairdresser, but I did the take time to do the research and consult my own hairdresser to make sure I was giving you the proper advice! Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried any of these tips or if you end up trying them I’d love to hear about it!
