Cornwall Ontario – We all get them every week.   Mine goes straight to the recycle bin, but that’s exactly why city’s like Montreal are deciding whether to ban them altogether.  LINK

Locally TC Media ships them with the Seaway News weekly, but most end up in our landfill.    With more communities banning plastic bags and needing new dump space it’s something to ponder as we near 2019.

Essentially we taxpayers are subsidizing their distribution system.   Does that make sense in 2018?

Is it Time to Tax or Ban Ad Bags in Ontario?

While there are still a few folk without regular access online those numbers are getting smaller, not larger and one has to ask using Cornwall and area as an example if pumping 20-30,000 bags is worth it as the city gets no value from this service?

Maybe it’s time to factor in a municipal tax for print ad delivery including junk mail sent via Canada Post.   In a city like Cornwall facing a 7% tax raise, even a modest tax to cover landfill and recycling costs could be positive?

  1. The Ad Bag’s a perfect fit for my bathroom garbage can… I don’t have to stretch it like I do with the little clear plastic produce baggies I grab at Baxtrom’s, which I’m boycotting now, in solidarity with the “means of production” folks walking the line. Up Labour! …Oh but I miss my blood pudding, only place in town you can get it.

Anyway, yah, the ad bag’s a waste of paper and ad dollars.

  2. Thumbs down!?? What the…

Was it scorn for the ad bag?
    – Repurposing it as a garbage can liner is the ultimate “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.

Was it using produce bags for groceries?
    – Ya know, they hold two loaves of bread, they’re free, and you can use ’em for doggie do.

Was it expressing support for strikers?
    – Ya know, “Up Labour!” is a declaration of support.

    OMG! The blood pudding?

  3. Maybe the ad bag can be available in certain places, and if people want them they can grab one instead of delivering to everyone. I like canadian tire. Oh and I feel for the Baxtrom’s strikers but i certainly will not boycott some of the best meat in town. It’s not just them because they have a union, EVERYONE needs more $$. Inflation. If you feel bad for them you must not know about Walmart pay.

  4. So a few months back i told one of the people delivering the Ad-Bag that i didn’t want to receive them, they acknowledge and went about their evening. The next day i had someone call my house to see if i had been receiving my Ad-Bag, I told them i did not want it. They told me that i had to call a 1-800 # and request a sticker, if i didn’t want anymore. I never asked for it to start!

  5. I can’t even get ad bag delivered to my home or street. Nobody in our area gets it. It’s been like that for weeks. The whole street both sides and other nearby streets. I’ve called them, These grocery stores pay them to get their flyers out. It’s not getting delivered. Guess I’ll get my flyers online. Hey can’t beat CFN for news over SN.
