Technology trends to watch in 2019

Technology never stops moving forward and new developments are an integral part of the field. As such, there are always new trends to keep track of. At this point in the year, we have compiled a list of the most interesting technological advancements that enhance our lives in 2019.

  1. Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is probably commonly associated with entertainment. In fact, people list virtual reality headsets as tools for fun along with PC games, listening to music, and watching movies. But the possibilities for application of Virtual Reality far exceed mere entertainment.

The technology can be used for educational and advertising purposes as well. It’s becoming more common for example, for doctors to train to do surgery via virtual reality headsets, or soldiers to undergo parts of their military training in virtual reality scenarios. It’s also applied to patient rehabilitation after injury, and in museums, which can create more immersive experiences for their visitors. There are also some innovative examples of virtual reality used in marketing.

  1. Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI is a hot topic at the moment because of fears of potential job losses it can create. However, experts say that AI will simply replace tasks rather than jobs. Many markets have begun to take advantage of the complex data collection and analysis methods achievable by AI and used them in their investment and marketing strategies.

Examples include the world’s largest investment funds, online marketplace and hospitality services, and live casinos. Many everyday tasks can also be made more convenient with AI. Navigation apps make it easy to find our way around and reach the desired destination, while ride-sharing apps save us time, money, and can make travel more environmentally friendly. We have home and smartphone personal assistants and smart home devices that simplify the management of home devices, email, and to do lists, just to name a few. In terms of more high profile uses, AI is applied to healthcare, the automotive industry, finance, video games, the military, and even Art and Advertising.

  1. Blockchain

Despite what you might think blockchain technology doesn’t just relate to cryptocurrency. In its simplest form, blockchain is a list of blocks linked together, to which you can only add more, never take away and never edit. For this reason, it offers an incredibly secure data system that can’t be altered, so you don’t need a third-party to oversee or validate transactions.

This has implications for data protection, for example, personal or medical information, and can drastically improve the flow of goods and services known as supply chain management.

  1. Internet of Things

Internet of things is the way everyday objects can be connected to the internet. Internet connectivity across different devices means that we can control things remotely through apps on our phones. For example, if we forget to lock our front doors, we can do it from the bus into work, or we can turn the oven on to preheat it before we even get home from work. All this makes the managing of your household more convenient and planning for the day ahead more comfortable.

  1. Cyber Security

Internet connectivity is an essential component of growing fields like hardware authentication, cloud technology, deep learning, data loss prevention, and behavioural analytics. All this developing technology is vulnerable to hackers, who continuously come up with new ways of breaching those systems so cybersecurity has to catch up. It’s a constant game of cat and mouse and new developments in the field are definitely not going to cease.
