Hand washing is paramount now that the flu season will be upon us. I read in a few articles that the problem is that we don’t wash our hands long enough. It was suggested that when washing with soap and good warm water to sing the “Happy Birthday” song – two verses and also to wash in between our fingers.

Common places that are frequently used by others like the handles on the grocery carts, ATM machines, railings and one article mentioned that even restaurant salt and pepper shakes, ketchup bottles, etc. apparently can be a problem. So it is up to us to also use the liquid alcohol soap frequently when out and about as well.

Bob Katz’s great- granddaughter Gabriella is, at 3+ months, an art critic already. Her parents, Samantha and Daniel took her with them to the Toronto Art Museum. Apparently she “talked” for over an hour while looking at all the art, seemingly very interested in the paintings. All the people who walked by her were so surprised at her “talking” and were laughing. She was so cute, pointing at all the art and “babbling away” in 3+ month old “chatter”. Chatty little cutie.

In this photo her father Daniel is holding Gabriella. What a sweet little doll.

New renovations are underway at the Bishop’s House in St. Raphael’s, ON. Brenda Baxter, President of the Glengarry Fencibles Trust sent me this photo of recent work being done on the front veranda with the installation of a railing. Apparently the demolition of the 1930’s kitchen at the rear is complete which will leave the building with more green space outside and more potential light within, especially the 1808 portion of the house.

The work is being done by Ranald MacDonald Construction. In this photo are George Carrier and Ranald Macdonald.

The Glengarry Fencible Trust is a dedicated group of volunteers who are fundraising to restore the historic Bishop’s House.

For more information or to make a donation contact Brenda Baxter at 613-931-2022 or Allan Macdonnell at 613-525-5410 or go to the website. Mailing address is 4739 Frog Hollow Rd., Green Valley, ON, KOC ILO.

The mention of Frog Hollow brings back lots of memories of going for a walk at lunch time down that road when I worked at Mount Carmel House Treatment Center for Drug and Alcohol Abuse . It was situated in the Bishop’s House from 1981 to 1996. I had the privilege of working there for 14 years along with a lot of wonderful dedicated staff.

One exceptional staff member was Randy Lalonde who was a big asset to the center. He was great with our residents who all liked him and he had a great sense of humour. When he left MCH, he later became a Paramedic.

Randy and another Paramedic, Scott Halliday, from the Cornwall-SDG Paramedic Services, will receive the Governor General’s Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Award. I spoke with Randy and he said they should be receiving them soon. These awards are given to paramedics who have served at least 20 years of service ad who have exhibited the highest standards of conduct and professionalism.

According to the interesting information on the web site, this award was created on July 7, 1994 to “recognize professionals in the provision of pre- hospital emergency services to the public who have performed their duties in an exemplary manner, characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency.”

Congratulations to Randy and Scott. And a big thank you to all our Paramedics for taking good care of us.

A friend sent in this amusing item, author uknown :

“Anyone born in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’sor 80’s are the last generation who played on the streets. We are the first who played video games and the last to record songs off the radio on a cassette tape. We walked over a mile with no worries of being taken. We learned how to program the VCR before anyone else. We played Atari to Nintendo. We are the generation of Tom and Gerry, Loony Toons, Captain Kangaroo. We travelled in cars with no seat belts or air bags. We lived without cell phones. We did not have flat screens, surround sound, IPods, Facebook, Twitter, computers or the Internet….But nevertheless, we had a great time.”

A cute joke from a reader:

In a Detroit church one Sunday morning, a preacher said, ” Anyone with special needs who wants to be prayed over, please come forward to the front of the altar.”

With that, Leroy got in line.

The preacher asked him what he wanted to be prayed for.

Leroy replied, ” Preacher, I need you to pray for my hearing.”

The preacher put one hand on Leroy’s ear and the other hand on Leoy’s head. He prayed and prayed. The whole congreation joined in with great enthusiasm.

After a few minutes, the preacher removed his hands, stood back and asked, “Leroy, how is your hearing now?”

Leroy replied, ” I don’t know. It ain’t ’til Thursday.”

Have a good week, Dawn
