Seniors Situation Room. By Dawn Ford – Happy 104th to EDNA DOREY & Seniors Residences Should All be Tested 051720

A very special senior, Edna Dorey, celebrated her 104th. birthday in May. Happy Birthday and all good wishes, Edna. .

Distancing is not a very natural thing to do. You automatically go to the person to speak with them. Some hard of hearing seniors are finding that they don’t hear another person as well at a distance, especially if outside and the wind is blowing. I read somewhere that when your hearing starts to go, you automatically start to lip read. The closer the better for that also.

Some seniors are finding the time long. They can’t plan going out for lunch with a friend or having a friend in for a visit. Apart for going outside for a walk, activities have slowed to a snail’s pace. One senior told me she is watching a lot of reruns of comedy shows like Seinfeld to try to keep some kind of a mental balance with all the bad news of the pandemic surrounding us constantly. A lot of cross word and jigsaw puzzles are getting done apparently. One senior though remarked that it is true, we are at a standstill in regard to socializing, etc. but the good news we have to focus on one day at a time, is that we are well.

I wonder why they don’t test seniors in senor residences. Just on Augustus Street alone in over a block and a half are hundreds of seniors and more at the seniors residence at Water and York Streets.

When we were kids, we said a fast poem when we say a robin. If we could say it fast enough before the bird moved, we would have good luck.

When I saw my first robin one day I remarked on how beautiful it was. I quickly said the old poem that we said as kids:

“Lucky lucky robin,

Lucky lucky lee,

Lucky lucky robin

Bring good luck to me.”

But it wasn’t fast enough and he flew away just as I finished the poem. Good luck maybe?? It was really a tie., Mr. Robin. We will see.

My friend Frances Irwin sent me this lovely photo of a robin in her back yard. It is gorgeous.

Speaking of wildlife. A friend sent me this photo of a bunny rabbit that appeared in her backyard on Easter Sunday morning.

She had her own Easter bunny. So cute. She said there are now two bunnies who visited her yard often.

I came across some old pictures of the Sgt. Preston of the Yukon show which was on our old black and white TV’s and our comic books in 1955-58. I thought it was earlier for some reason although I read that it was based on the radio show “Challenge of the Yukon” which we probably listened to on our big old radios. He had a horse, Rex ,and a dog, Yukon King. I thought at the time that it was really neat that the Mounties not only wore beautiful red jackets but also had their own horses and dogs. I was to learn that it was not the case. At the time there were no female Mounties. We girls were out of luck.

I went on line to read that Sgt. William Preston was played by Richard Simmons and that the dog, Yukon King, was not a husky but really a large Alaskan Malamute.

It was a great show and as kids we loved to listen to it on the radio and see it later on TV. I remember as a kid thinking the Mounties sure had big sun hats. Kids, eh?

We all enjoy a good meal and love our desserts. But sometimes we can overeat and say, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing.” This cute photo of Gabriella tells it all.

She is certainly expressing those thoughts. What a little sweetie. She is the great granddaughter of a local senior, Bob Katz.

A friend sent in these funny one liners+ that were apparently on T-shirts:

1) Scientists say the universe is made up of Protons, Neutrons and electrons. They forgot to mention morons.

2) My wife says I have two faults: I don’t listen and something else.

3) At my funeral take the bouquet off my coffin and throw it into the crowd to see who is next.

4) Twinkle, Twinkle little star. Point me to the nearest bar.

5) I thought growing old would take longer.

6) To me “drinking responsibly” means don’t spill it.

7) If you are happy and you know it it’s your meds.

8) A little grey hair is a small price to pay for all this wisdom.

9) If I say I will do it, I will do it!! No need to remind me every 6 months.

10) My heart says chocolate and wine but my jeans say: for the love of God, woman, eat a salad.

11) I am good in bed. I can sleep for days.

12) The secret of enjoying good wine: 1. Open the bottle to allow it to breathe. 2. If it doesn’t look like it’s breathing, give it mouth to mouth .

Have a good week, Dawn

  1. I too remember the poem, Lucky lucky robin ….. . My Mom taught me that to see my first robin in the spring sitting on something high meant good luck for that coming year.

  2. I know they are planning on checking all privately run retirement residences. Hopefully, they plan on testing what Dawn is referring to, senior apartment buildings.

  3. Love your new wallpaper Admin. “Make Cornwall Great.”
