JUNE 28, 2021 – Many years ago the Paragon Motel on Second Street West was a favourite place to swim in their great pool. They also held parties and other gatherings.

Recently, a friend, Jack, sent me this article which he found on one of the Cornwall Historic sites. It is a memo from my late brother, Sonny Herrington, President of the Navy Vets Association to members about a meeting at the Paragon Hotel. We estimate that it was in the 1960’s.

It was a real treat to see this photo. Thanks Jack for sharing it with us.

The North American parable of “Two Wolves” is a Cherokee Indian Legend according to a web site and illustrates the most important battle of our lives – the one between our good and bad thoughts.

Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two “wolves” inside us all.

One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.

The other is Good. it is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Beautiful legend.

Brenda Baxter, President of the Glengarry Fencilbes Trust sent me an article which had appeared in a recent issue of the Glengarry News.

The article states that Mount Carmel House Treatment Center for drug and alcohol abuse was opened on July 17th, 1981,which was housed in the historic Bishop’s House in St. Raphael’s Ontario.

Forty years ago. I started working there in 1982 until it closed in June of 1996.Where did all those years go – so quickly!!! I have wonderful memories of my time working there and all the dedicated staff I worked with and our incredible residents who worked so hard on their recoveries. I am grateful for those 14 years.

The Bishop’s House is now under renovation, thanks to the Glengarry Fencilbes Trust, a group of volunteers who are raising money to pay for the renovations.

For more information, go to their web site: www.bishopshouse.ca or contact Brenda Baxter at 613-931-2022 or Allan Macdonell at 613-525-5410.

Here is a fun limerick we can all relate to:

“I’m really determined and keen,

To start giving this house a spring clean.

I will do it, I say,

Yes, I’ll do it today..

Well, I’ll do it tomorrow, I mean.”

I received a summer newsletter from Center 105 Drop-in which is a Ministry of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa and located here in Cornwall in the Trinity Anglican Church hall. The newsletter states that the centre offers services to the community by offering breakfast as well as a hot beverage every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am to noon. Because of the pandemic, they offer take-out meals from their Breakfast Pick-up window at the present time. In May they provided 847 meals. Eighty six registered participants were to receive emergency food hampers on June 24th. offered by the Regional Emergency Response Council.

My Tiger boy just celebrated his 18th. birthday on June 23rd. I adopted him from the SPCA when he was 5 years old. He has been a wonderful cat and is still full of ‘vim and vinegar’.

Lately he has decided to make his bed in the living room. For years I tried to get him to spend more time with me in the living room and now, all of a sudden, he is spending all his time in there in his little bed on the floor. He has a bed on the couch but prefers the one on the floor. Once in a while he lies on the bed in the bedroom but that is because he is waiting for me to do something, like brush him or give him his food with his pill in it. What a cat!! But, cute as they come. I am so grateful to still have him.

Here are some cute jokes sent me by a friend:

!) Pharmacist to a customer: “Madam, please understand, to buy an anti-depression pill you need a proper prescription. Simply showing your marriage certificate and husband’s picture is not enough.”

2) A book seller conducting a market survey asked a woman, “Which book has helped you the most in your life?” The woman replied,” My husband’s cheque book!!”

3) You haven’t experienced true heartbreak until you’ve been thinking about leftovers all day and then come home to find that someone ate them.

4) Brains are awesome. I wish everybody had one.

5) Some days I amaze myself. Other days, I look for my phone while I am holding it.

5) My wife just stopped and said, “You weren’t even listening, were you?”

I thought…that’s a pretty weird way to start a conversation.

6) Middle age – that time in your life when you finally get your head together and then your body starts to fall apart.

7)A Police Officer came to my house and asked me where I was between 5 & 6. He seemed irritated when I answered, “Kindergarten.”

8)Mister Rogers did not adequately prepare me for the people in my neighbourhood.

9) I often wonder who Pete is and why we do things for his sake…..!

10)You know you’re getting old when you can’t walk past a bathroom without thinking, “I might as well pee while I’m here.”

Have a good week, Dawn
