Featuring The Artists of ArtScene Spencerville
CFN – Elsie Gallinger, who lives in Morrisburg Ontario, is a wife, a mother, a grandmother and an amazing painter. She has also been a teacher and a quilter, both of which she left behind to follow her desire to paint. The first was her profession and the second, a hobby that could not compete with the urge to paint.
Artists find their inspirations in many and varied places; what inspires one artist makes no impression on another. I had not heard of, or met, Elsie before she joined ArtScene Spencerville in May of 2012, even though she has an extensive following in the Ottawa and Eastern Ontario areas.
My first encounter was not with Elsie, but with her work. That first time, I wondered whether we had somehow managed to attract one of the Group of Seven. The painting was a landscape, mostly earth tones, and it invited you to stop, look and feel. It was an incredible introduction to a charming and talented artist.
Elsie works with several different media, including pen and ink, watercolours and mixed media, but her favourite is oil on canvas, applied with a palette knife. She prefers earth tones accented with white, but on occasion will create wonderfully delicate floral groupings that are very reminiscent of the Victorian era. She readily admits that the Group of Seven are her inspiration and she considers her work to be impressionistic.
Elsie was educated at the University of Waterloo and St. Lawrence College and is a member of ArtScene Spencerville as well as several other artists’ groups.

nice paintings!
One of my favourite Regional Artists.
Excellent post, admin. Joy indeed—even online Elsie Gallinger’s paintings are must-see.
Went to Spencerville today to visit the gallery. It was awesome. I ended up buying one small painting and a napkin box. They both have coffee related images on them. I couldn’t help my self.
I do quilting, embroidery and needlepoint and I sure do love art and good art not the crappy modern stuff. This is a good artist indeed. I like the scene that the lady painted.
