Stick a Fork in George Laraque’s Hab Career – Montreal Canadien’s Big Man Sent Home – January 21, 2010

Alas Georges Laraque has ceased to be a Hab.    Montreal General Manager Bob Gainey made the announcement that coach Jacques Martin no longer has a role for Big George with Les Bleu, Blanc, et Rouge.

I think the last game where Benoit Pouliot and Josh Gorges had fights showed how ineffective and pointless Big George was to this team.

The Habs are in a very tight spot.   I love how the cap has turned the NHL into a Rotisserie Hockey League.   Parity is the rule of the day and one 4 game losing streak can ruin an entire season at this point.

Montreal is currently 1 point out of that vital 8th spot.  While PANIC may not be the word of the day; surely concern is.

Could Big George’s salary allow for a modestly priced pick up?

Even a Peter Sykora?

Look at what $750K bought us in Marc-Andre Bergeron.

While some may criticize Bob Gainey for not being able to find a victim to take on Laraque, at the very least one question has been answered as this team enters the home stretch of their 2009-2010 season.

  1. …MTL must still count Georges’s salary against their cap…not just that…he will continue to take a roster spot as well, limiting them to 22 from 23 players…that’s a very big statement from Mr. Gainey…

unless they bury him in the minors or buy him out. If he’s in the minors or injured his salary will not count during the time he’s not on the roster. If they buy him out only about half his salary will be a cap hit.

Half is salary is another Marc-Andre Bergeron.

  3. …but, Georges’s has a “No Movement Clause” so they can’t bury him in the minors…and they have to wait until June 15-30 to buy him out…unless someone is willing to take on his contact through a trade, he’s not going anywhere…
