Cornwall’s Agapè Centre has just concluded its biggest event of the year, the distribution of the annual Christmas Hampers, which took place at the Cornwall Armoury yesterday. But for Judy Dancause, Executive Director of the centre, and for the other staff and volunteers, the holidays are still a long way off.

“Yesterday, we distributed Christmas Hampers to 985 local families. This has been the biggest distribution ever, and an increase of over 100 since last year.”

Although the Christmas Hamper distribution is successfully over, the Centre still needs our help. “We’ve collected lots of food,” says Judy. “But demand has never been higher, so it won’t last long. January is always a difficult time.”

Tomorrow, Agapè Centre volunteers will be organising another major food drive, this time at the Metro on Brookdale Avenue, to try and get a head start for January.

The Agapè Centre Soup Kitchen, located in the Agapè Centre Building on Fifth Street West, behind St. Columban’s, is also busy as ever, serving from 120 to 150 meals a day. The kitchen will be open throughout the Christmas season, from twelve noon till 2:00 pm, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Christmas Day’s special menu will feature “Turkey and all the trimmings.”

When asked for the current most pressing need, Judy replied that “food, money, and volunteers are always appreciated, year round, but especially at this time of year.”

The Agapè Centre is a registered charity, so you will get an income tax receipt for any cash donations. More details can be found on the Centre’s website, agapecentre.ca
