Ottawa Senators on a Roll, Prorogue Canucks – Habs Win – Kovalchuck a Devil! – NHL Round Up – February 5, 2010

What are they feeding those Ottawa Senators and where do I get some?   The line up for the Sens doesn’t really strike fear in too many teams, but they keep winning.  Good goal tending and maxing out the value of those on the ice, and dare I say good coaching have the Senators all but locked up for a play off spot and the team hunting for some extra juice for the play offs.

The Sens beat Vancouver last night in Ottawa 3-1 on goals from Michalek, Spezza, and an empty net by Chris Kelly.   Brian Elliot picked up the win.  Ottawa was out shot and the Canucks have to be scratching their heads after losing to both Montreal and Ottawa.

The Habs meanwhile, behind another 40+ save performance of Jaroslav Halak grabbed 2 more points by beating cellar destined Bruins 3-2 in the shoot out.  Typical of Montreal they were out shot 47-25 with Glen Metropolit and Roman Hamrlik finding the net.  Scott Gomez picked up two assists.  He’s starting to rack up the points slowly and not look that bad an investment.

Brian Gionta potted the winner in the shoot out.

And after a lot of blogging and hand wringing Ilya Kovalchuk was swapped to the New Jersey Devils for some bits and bobs and a 1st Round draft pick.   It seems pretty anti-climactic and comes on the heels of Mr. Kovalchuk turning down a $100 million dollar contract to stay in Atlanta who received D-Man Johnny Oduya , the 1st, Niclas Bergfors, and Patrice Cormiers.   Atlanta tossed Anssi Salmela who comes back to the Devils after being traded earlier.

So what do you think of the deal?  Did Atlanta get enough for Kovalchuk as a rental player?  Post your comments below.
