New OPP Commander for Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Detachment – Cornwall Ontario – May 27, 2010

Cornwall ON – Chief Superintendent Gary Couture is pleased to announce the appointment of RCMP Assistant Commissioner Mike McDonell as the new Commander of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (S.D. & G.) OPP
Detachment, effective August 1, 2010.

The SD & G Police Services Board approved the appointment of Assistant Commissioner McDonell on May 25, 2010.  His rank with the Ontario Provincial Police will be Inspector.

“Assistant Commissioner McDonell is a tremendous addition to our team in Eastern Ontario”, said Chief Superintendent Couture.  “He grew up in the Glengarry area and brings with him a diverse law enforcement background from his years with the RCMP.”

McDonell served as the Commander of the RCMP’s Cornwall Detachment and prior to that had served as the officer in charge of the Cornwall RCMP Detachment’s Criminal Intelligence Section.  McDonell is currently the Assistant Commissioner of the RCMP’s “O”-Division, which covers all of Ontario, with the exception of Ottawa.

He began his policing career with the RCMP in 1975, serving in various roles including general policing duties in Alberta, Anti-Terrorism, Border Integrity and Drug Investigations.  Mike also participated in a Civilian Policing mission
in the former Yugoslavia and spent time as part of the RCMP’s world famous Musical Ride.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity to lead a group of dedicated men and women, who are committed to ensuring a safe and secure community for the residents of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties,” said  McDonell.  “I am looking forward to returning to community policing and the challenges and opportunities that this new position will bring.”

McDonell succeeds Inspector Dave Springer, who was recently re-deployed to OPP Eastern Region Headquarters.
