World Cup – And then …Brazil! by David Rawnsley

Cornwall ON – What is it about Brazil that makes them special when it comes to soccer? The only country to have won the World Cup in both hemispheres; one of the few multi-winner countries; the home of greats such as Pele, Rinaldo, Ronaldinho, and many others too numerous to list here; what makes Brazil the home of soccer?

The collective consciousness of the country, the region, and the world; we all believe they are the greatest, and they know they are the greatest. Let us call it the “Tiger Condition” – if you know you are unbeatable; your opponents know you are unbeatable; the gallery knows you are unbeatable, and; the viewing public knows you are unbeatable, then the most probably outcome from a world conditioned by the collective consciousness is that you are unbeatable. This reinforces itself as it runs through the same scenario time-and-time-again the end-product being the Brazilian national soccer team – custodians of the winning tradition.

The question is: can anyone beat Brazil when it matters? I do not think Argentina can do it, they, as fellow South Americans, are steeped in the Brazilian winning tradition. Is there a European side? The Dutch are the only ones performing at any level. France, Italy, Germany and England will all struggle to qualify for the last 16. Can anyone in the east challenge Brazil’s global soccer supremacy?  I think not. Japan and the Koreas are countries catching up, and New Zealand and Australia are already hitting above their weight.

If you are a student of this beautiful game then one safe prediction is that Brazil will be there at the death – certainly one of the finalists.

  1. Brazil certainly has to be considered the favourite, but I believe my boys in orange will prevail, wooden shoes and all.

  2. I thought the photograph of Melly was fantastic but lets not be too hasty with our predictions.
