Rik Saaltink to Speak on The History of the North Channel Bridge hosted by St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences – April 13, 2011 7 PM – Cornwall Ontario

Cornwall ON – The Science and Nature Speaker Series has a local interest this month, with guest speaker Rik Saaltink, from the Seaway International Bridge Corporation. On April 13 at 7 pm, Rik will give a presentation at the Cornwall Public Library entitled, “The North Channel Bridge: Past Present and Future”.   Rik will talk about the history of the Cornwall bridge, from its beginnings as a railroad; to the development and construction of the current span; to a description of the plans for the new bridge.  You will understand the rationale behind the huge structure that dominates Brookdale Avenue, and the improvements the new, low-level bridge will bring.

Hendrik Saaltink is the General Manager of the Seaway International Bridge Corporation – he is a Civil Engineer, with work experience that started on coastal structure design in British Columbia, and led him to the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority in 1988 and the Seaway International Bridge in Cornwall in 1990.  Rik has been a member of the Board of Directors of the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences for many years, and was recently elected as its Chairman. This talk is sponsored by the Professional Engineers of Ontario, Upper Canada Chapter.

Join Mr. Rik Saaltink at the Cornwall Public Library on Wednesday, April 13 at 7 pm.  Admission is free, however space is limited.  Please call the River Institute to reserve your seat 613-936-6620.

The Science and Nature Speaker Series is hosted by the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences and the Cornwall Public Library, and funded entirely by sponsorships and community donations.
