All Things Food Community Network hires Dana Kittle – June 1, 2011 – Cornwall Ontario

Cornwall ON – All Things Food was formed in 2008 by local organizations and individuals who were passionate about transforming our local food system into one that is sustainable and strong.   The Network, which now has over twenty members, is guided by a steering collaborative consisting of The Upper Canada Leger Centre for Education and Training (UCLCET), Le Centre de Santé communautaire de l’Estrie, The House of Lazarus, The Social Development Council of Cornwall and Area, and The Eastern Ontario Health Unit.

Thanks to funding from The Trillium Foundation, All Things Food has hired local resident Dana Kittle to coordinate network activities and to develop programming.

Ms. Kittle encourages community residents to get involved in building a sustainable food system in SD&G.  So how can you get involved?  All Things Food will host a variety of “How to Grow Your Own Food!” workshops this year to empower residents to grow their own fruit, veggies and herbs.  The next workshop, with a focus on container gardening, takes place in Winchester on June 13th.  Dana notes that All Things Food is always looking for community members to share their food-related knowledge at future workshops.  Persons who wish to share their experience in canning and preserving this fall can get in touch with her by e-mailing dana@allthingsfoodbouffe360.ca.

Other activities set to take place this year include: Farm-to-school events, an SD&G local food assessment, and film showings with local food tastings.  The local food assessment will be conducted in partnership with the University of London (UK) and will survey local producers, farmer’s markets, community food programs, and food service providers.  The survey will help determine the needs and market for local food in the area.
