Walking in the back field I noticed something fly by out of the corner of my eye. Closer inspection revealed a European Praying Mantis. (Mantis religiosa)

This particular specimen is native to Europe and was introduced into North America at the end of the nineteenth century. It can be found in the wild in most parts of Eastern America. All of the world’s manitids are voracious predators of various insects. As such they are considered beneficial insects.

According to “Signs, Symbols & Omens: An Illustrated Guide to Magical & Spiritual Symbolism”, a Praying Mantis is regarded as a “very fortunate sign.” One thing is for sure…I always consider it my good fortune to have the opportunity to watch and study one of these fascinating insects. Their ability to move their heads 180° to watch you gives them an air of intellect.

Thanks Soc. Just to add a little perspective to this photograph…the length of the body only from head to end is about 2 1/4 “…this does not include the legs or antennae which are quite long. Impressive creature.
