OPP CHARGES TWO PEOPLE UNDER MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS ACT

Investigation of 2014 Municipal Election Filings

(ORILLIA, ON) – Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged two Toronto residents following an investigation into irregularities under the Municipal Elections Act.

In September 2017, the OPP received a request for assistance from the Toronto Police Service. The request was in relation to a referral from the Integrity Commissioner for the City of Toronto involving two councillors and the 2014 municipal election. As a result of the investigation, members of the OPP Anti-Rackets Branch have charged:

1)   Mark GRIMES, aged 57 years, with filing a document under section 88.25 of the Municipal Elections Act that is incorrect or does not otherwise comply with that section, contrary to section 92(1)(b) of the Municipal Elections Act.

2)   Justin Di CIANO, aged 40 years, with filing a document under section 88.25 of the Municipal Elections Act that is incorrect or does not otherwise comply with that section, contrary to section 92(1)(b) of the Municipal Elections Act.

The accused are scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice at 2201 Finch Avenue West in Toronto on Wednesday December 19, 2018.




The investigation is continuing under the direction of Detective Inspector Gerald Scherer of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. Anyone with information is asked to call the OPP Anti-Rackets Branch at (705) 329-6420 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The OPP will not comment further in order to protect the integrity of the investigation and any ensuing court processes.
