Valentine’s Day is coming up soon. There have been red hearts in lots of the stores for quite awhile. I also have seen some Easter Bunnies.
I found this old Valentine sent to me by a young relative some years ago. So cute.
Cards are nice but just so you guys out there know the truth – a big box of chocolates would be very very welcome.
I went on line to read about St. Valentine’s Day and one web site said that Valentine’s Day is traditionally associated with red hearts, romance, flowers and candy or other sweet things and also the sending of valentine cards. Aha!!Notice the ‘candy’. Make mine chocolate.
I saw on the news that Veterans Affairs Canada is asking people to send Valentines to our Veterans in Long-term Care facilities. It certainly would be a nice gesture and bring them some joy.
A very special local senior, Hazel McIntyre, just recently celebrated her 90th. birthday. Happy Happy Birthday, Hazel.
Here is a photo of Hazel as a young 16 year lass sitting on the fender of a Model T Ford which she said had belonged to her husband before they were married. They had to crank it up to get it going and could then enjoy short rides in it. Lovely photo. Lovely lass.
A friend of mine, Jack Bornais, is another talented artist in our area. This painting of his is actually an’ Intarsia’ which is made on wood and mirror.
According to Jack, an Intarsia begins with a mosaic or puzzle type of pattern that is transposed onto the wood which is then cut out with a scroll or band saw. The wood pieces are then sanded and /or contoured to the desired look.
Each completed piece is then glued to a backing and mounted on a wall. This one has a frame and mirror incorporated into it. It was made to complement a Safari themed room. Beautiful. Jack, thanks so much for sharing this painting with us.
Many years ago a friend gave me a copy of one of her favourite poems. I went online to see who the author was. Apparently, there are 5 different authors and versions with the same meanings but using some different words. This one in particular is attributed to Confucius (551 BC-479 BC) , a Chinese philosopher.
“Knows and Knows Not
He who knows not, and knows not that he knows not, is a fool – shun him.
He who knows not and knows that he knows not, is a child – teach him.
He who knows, and knowsnot that he knows, is asleep-wake him.
He who knows and knows that he knows is a wise man – follow him”.
A friend sent me this photo of her two dogs she calls her “little babies”. So cute.
Not sure if my Tiger cat would like them so much.
The Seaway Seniors Centre will be holding a Senior Active Living Fair on February 8th.from 10am to 2pm. The centre is located at 506 Pitt Street. Admission is free. There will be exhibits, presentations and seminars as well as demonstrations, healthy snacks and grab bags. You can enter to win prizes. This fair will give seniors who are looking for resources an idea of what are available and also where to go for support. Sounds like a very interesting event.
The centre also will be hosting a Valentine Dinner on February 13th.
