David Johnston chosen by Stephen Harper to be the new Governor General of Canada – Cornwall Ontario – July 8, 2010

Cornwall ON – Prime Minister Stephen Harper made his choice for 28th Governor General of Canada in David Johnston.  Mr. Johnston is currently the president of the University of Waterloo and has previously been with McGill University.

The governor general is required by both the Constitution Act (previously the British North America Act), 1867, and the letters patent issued in 1947 by King George VI.[17] As such, theCanadian monarch approves with commission issued under the royal sign-manual and Great Seal of Canada her Canadian prime minister‘s recommendation for viceroy, who is from then until being sworn-in referred to as the governor general-designate.[18][19]

Our new Governor General is slated to take office in October after Michaelle Jean finishes her term.
