Tim Hudak on MPP Bob Runciman’s Appointment to Senate Seat – January 29, 2010

Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak today issued the following statement in relation to the appointment of Bob Runciman, MPP, to the Senate of Canada:

“Today I would like to congratulate my friend and colleague, Bob Runciman, on his appointment to the Senate of Canada and thank him for 29 years of leadership, dedication and public service to the Ontario PC Party and the constituents of Leeds-Grenville.

“When I was first elected as an MPP in 1995, Bob Runciman was clearly established as one of most prominent and respected members of the PC Team.  From those days, my time in Cabinet, and through my time as Leader, Bob has been a tremendous source of advice and personal support. I learned a lot from Bob and I will continue to welcome his wise counsel.

“Losing one of the most effective and tenacious MPPs in a generation, the Ontario Legislature will be a much quieter place without Bob Runciman.

“As a Member of Provincial Parliament, senior cabinet minister and Interim Leader, Bob has been a consistent and determined champion for victims of crime, front-line police officers, the law enforcement community, and hard working Ontario families.

“The PC Party and Caucus are particularly grateful to Bob for the strong and steady leadership he provided during two tours of duty as Interim Leader.

“While his commanding presence will be missed in the Legislature, his many accomplishments including 1,000 new front-line police officers and establishing a Survivor’s Tuition Fund for families of fallen police officers bode very well for advancing the federal government’s initiatives to fight crime and strengthen the young offenders system.

“Those of us in public life are most successful when we have the love and support of our families. On behalf of the PC Caucus, I want to also thank his loving wife Jeannette and the Runciman family for their understanding of the sacrifices that come with holding elected office.

“I know that Senator Bob Runciman will serve the Canadian people with the same confidence and integrity he demonstrated as the MPP for Leeds-Grenville. The Ontario PC Caucus wish him every success in this next chapter of his distinguished political career.”
