A win is a win is a win. Some are more ugly than others, but Montreal held off the Caps as they stormed back eventually winning in overtime.
Montreal goals were by Glen Metropolit, Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt, Maxim Lapierre, and two by Tomas Plekanec. Carey Price got the W in spite of giving up 5 goals, but kudos go out to the entire team for gritting it out and finding a way to beat the best team in the NHL today.
Sergei Kostitsyn had 3 assists and was a plus 2 for the evening and deserves a lot of credit in the win.
A lot of people wrote off the Habs this weekend with the injuries to Benoit Pouliot, Marc Andre Bergeron, and GM Bob Gainey stepping down for the lack of Stanley Cup credentialed Pierre Gauthier.
I am one of those, but sports is an amazing thing and while this team may not be as good as last years they’ve shown a lot of heart. I think if the team had got them a bit of help along the way this season things may even look a bit differently.
There are a lot of good things to build on and a lot of bright hopefuls to pin optimism on for next year. I’m glad the team so far hasn’t done a Kovalchuk rent a player move because frankly it’s going to take more than one player to make this squad be a cup contender.
They do need to move a goalie, but the market may not warrant such a move at this time. Much maligned Scott Gomez isn’t that bad a player. Yes his salary is high, but how excessive is it and is it a hurdle? The man is still a number one centre and in case anyone hasn’t noticed has had a better year than last year’s number one centre.
Overall the Habs have had a good year. They didn’t bring up PK Subban and have allowed him to gain confidence and experience. They have given their own homegrown players more ice time and I think that names like Lapierre, Pacioretty, and others may be more prominent next year.
Whatever passes via the trade deadline, and rest of this season I think Hab fans have many reasons to smile. You can’t win the Stanley Cup every year, but you always want to feel that the team give its best and that its moving forward and closer to the goal, of drinking the bubbly from the lips of Lord Stanley’s Cup.
