World Cup – Yes, this is soccer at its best. – FIFA World Cup Soccer 2010 by David Rawnsley – Cornwall Ontario – July 3, 2010

Cornwall ON – Probably, one of the great games of soccer – Brazil verses Holland, 2010.
This game had everything – great acting from the assembled cast; excellent officiating from the Japanese referee; moments of magic; moments of drama; an outcome undecided until the final whistle; and soccer the like of which I have rarely seen. As a neutral, a game played at such a speed as to stupefy the observer; a prize for tuning in on the morning after Canada Day celebrations.

And the Ghana/Uruguay match was not too shabby either; last minute drama the likes of which have rarely been seen in World Cup history. A Uruguayan savior, who did what any defender would do – keep the ball out of the net. That he will miss the semi-final is hardly a hardship, his team, his country, will still be there, and should they somehow beat the team from Argentina then I am sure he will be back for the final.

Yes, this is soccer at its best. Soccer as played on Friday, July 2nd, 2010, is a rare commodity and those that shared in its playing on the field, in the stadium, in front of a television, shared in one of the great days. Will Holland go on to greater things? – I think a berth in the final beckons. Will Uruguay challenge to become the darlings of South America? – Probably not, I think that Argentina have that role sewn up. Will this day be remembered as the day the 2010 World
Cup came to life? – You’d better believe it!

I am salivating at the thought of the next matches – Germany verses Argentina and Paraguay verses Spain. Europe verses South America; western hemisphere verses eastern hemisphere; northern hemisphere verses south.

Bring it on!
