Cornall ON – Listen tonight at 7:30 PM EST to our very special Christmas Free For All with guest host Paul Aubin. Paul will be spinning some holiday cheer as well as presenting Patrick Stewart’s recital of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol!
Just in time for Christmas, Seaway Radio has a special treat in store for you: a special presentation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol as read by Patrick Stewart.
Best known for his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek franchise, Patrick Stewart is a classically trained actor and a veteran of the UK’s Royal Shakespeare Company. He has played a diverse array of Shakespearean roles including Prospero (The Tempest), Shylock (The Merchant of Venice), Oberon (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Cassius (Julius Caesar), Touchstone (As You Like It), King John and Titus Andronicus. Prior to Star Trek: The Next Generation, his best known television work included roles in the BBC’s adaptations of I, Caudius and John le Carré’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. In cinema, his work has been equally diverse, including the X-Men series of films, L.A. Story (written by Steve Martin), David Lynch’s Dune and the film version of Paul Rudnick’s acclaimed play, Jeffrey.
This is a truly masterful rendition of Dickens’ holiday classic, adapted by Stewart himself and playing all the roles. Although this version was recorded in 1991, he first performed it in 1988 as a one-man stage play and has done so for many years since to sold out audiences. His performance on Broadway has earned him a New York Drama Desk Award and an Olivier Award for his performance in London’s West End.
This is a deliberately minimalistic interpretation; no gimmicks, no sound effects, just one of the world’s finest actors displaying his incredible range and a remarkable conveyance of Dickens’ imagery. Indeed, according to The Washington Post, “Not only is Patrick Stewart wonderful, but this is surely one of the best performances of A Christmas Carol ever recorded…By sheer energy and dramatic skill, Stewart invests this story with not merely life, but freshness, excitement and wonder.” This reading of the story is truly the benchmark to which all others should be judged.
This special presentation will be broadcast on Sunday, December 19th at 8:00 pm, immediately following Seaway Radio’s Sunday Night Free-for-All. Be sure not to miss it.
And don’t forget our special Holiday edition of the Political Round Table Tuesday morning starting at 9 AM and of course every Wednesday night at 7:30 PM Reg Coffey takes you through a journey of the classics of the Golden Age of Radio on his Old Tyme Radio show!
