Akwesasne Mohawk Territory – For teams to win big their stars have to come through in the big games and last night Pierre Dagenais didn’t dissipoint scoring 2 goals and an assist in the Akwesasne Warriors win which made them the first Championship team in Federal Hockey league history!
The former Hab had 10 shots on net recorded as well. But he wasn’t the only star and the team played truly inspired physical hockey as they wore down the New York Aviators with their physical and fast play. Their feet didn’t stop moving and Aviator goalie Kevin Druce kept the score closer than the play deserved.
Addison Pelkey (centre with Captain Pat Deraspe and Pierre Dagenais) showed a lot of grit and was one of my favorite Warriors during the season. Every great team needs their full team to win and Pelkey showed up to play every game. His aggressive forecheck and tenacity on the puck were a factor in the game and he had 4 penalty minutes as both teams while physical tried to not get penalties. There were no fights in the match either. Akwesasne out shot New York 41-38.
All eyes were on the clock during the dying minutes of the game as New York pressed hard, but two empty net goals ended the Aviators hopes as the Turtle Dome erupted into cheers that didn’t end until the buzzer went ending an amazing first season for the team.
Next year more teams are expected to join the league.
Martin Beaulne and Ahmed Mahfouz also scored for Akwesasne. Peter Dundovich and Michael Thomason scored for New York.
We’ll be updating this story with video throughout the day so keep checking back and congrats to the whole Akwesasne Warrior and Federal Hockey League Family!
