OPP Warn of Phone Scams – Your Police Blotter for Cornwall Ontario and area – May 6, 2011

Long Sault ON – The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind people to be very careful of anyone requesting they wire money to assist an injured relative or one who has been arrested and requiring bail money to be wired. There are also several other scams where people are told they have won money but need to send some money first to secure their prize, Others want you to hold onto millions of dollars as their country is under siege etc… Over payment scams for internet purchases, the list is limitless.

SDG OPP have  received a  complaint of a scam where a suspect contacted an unsuspecting person and identifying himself as a relative or grandchild who is sick and is in dire need of cash to be wired through Western Union for medical expenses. Do not wire anyone any money if you are not sure who they really are. Please obtain as much caller information such as phone numbers, addresses etc …and contact police if you are unsure or contact another family member to verify if indeed the call is genuine.

OPP Recover Stolen Property

(Finch, ON) – On May 4, 2011, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Eastern Region – Rural Agricultural Crime Team (RACT) and Stormont Dundas & Glengarry (SDG) Detachment, executed a search warrant for stolen property at a residence on County Road 14, North Stormont Township.

As a result, officers recovered of a stolen camper trailer, an all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) and a utility trailer. Also seized were numerous pieces of machinery and equipment that were believed to be offence related property. The total value of items seized was estimated at $60,000.00.

Curry DALLAS, 38 of North Stormont Township, (Finch), was charged with:

  1. two (2) counts of property obtained by crime over five thousand dollars and
  2. three (3) counts of possession of property obtained by crime under five thousand dollars.

He is scheduled to appear in Cornwall court on June 7, 2011.

The investigation is continuing.

BREAK AND ENTER

Cornwall, Ont. – The Cornwall Community Police Service is investigating a break and enter which occurred sometime between 05:30 am and 07:30 pm on the 30th of April at an Eleventh Street apartment.  The suspect(s) gained entry by entering an unlocked rear door to the apartment.  Once inside, the suspect(s) stole a 32” JCV LCD television, a JVC home theatre audio video receiver/DVD player, 3 Nintendo Wii games and a Nintendo game cube.  If you have any information, please contact the Service by dialing (613) 932-2110.
