Question
Can pilots see other airplanes on their radar ?

Question posted by Sarah.

Answer
The radar in the airplanes is not actually designed to see other airplanes. The radar is used to detect clouds and thunderstorms in the airplane’s flight path.

However there is equipment on commercial airplanes that is specifically designed to detect other airplanes. It is called Traffic and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). This system shows the pilots where other airplanes  around them are.  It also shows the pilots whether they need to climb or descend to another altitude to avoid a collision with another airplane.
