DISTRACTED DRIVING CAMPAIGN RESULTS

 

(Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry) – During the week July 11-17, 2011, SD&G OPP officers took part in the second or four Distracted Driving Campaigns dubbed “Phone in one hand, ticket in the other” taking place throughout the Province. In SD&G, a total of 33 drivers were charged for the offence on area roadways.

“Our Detachment is very serious about road safety”, states Inspector Mike McDonell, SD&G OPP Detachment Commander. He adds “We will continue our quest to discourage and target drivers who practice this unacceptable habit which could result in deadly consequences.”

Police encourage motorists to do their part in reporting unsafe drivers. Safe roads are everyone’s responsibility!


 

 

Bail Violations:

 

 

 

(South Stormont) – On July 14, 2011, SD&G OPP received a complaint of a missing youth who was bound by a curfew condition from a previous police incident. On July 16, 2011 in the afternoon, the 17yr old male from South Stormont was apprehended in the City ofCornwall by Cornwall Police and turned over to SD&G OPP. He faces a charge of;

 

  • o Fail to Comply with an Undertaking

 

 

 

He is scheduled to appear inCornwallcourt on August 4, 2011.

 

 

 

(South Glengarry) – On July 16, 2011, in the afternoon, SD&G OPP officers responded to a report of a domestic situation at a residence on County Road 2,SouthGlengarryTownship. A verbal altercation has taken place between a 43yr old male and his 37yr old common-law spouse.

 

Further investigation revealed both were bound by conditions from a previous police incident. Officers also located an unregistered rifle in the residence improperly stored. As a result, both face charges of;

 

  • o Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • o Careless Use of a Firearm
  • o Breach of Probation

 

 

 

Both are to appear inAlexandriacourt at a later date.

 

 

 

(North Glengarry) – On July 16, 2011, at approximately 11:00am, an SD&G OPP officer had the occasion to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on Highway 417,NorthGlengarryTownship. The stop resulted in the arrest of a male passenger in the vehicle who was in contravention of a condition from a previous police incident.

 

Kevin DUBIEN, 28 ofOrleansis charged with;

 

  • o Failing to Comply with an Undertaking

 

 

 

He is scheduled to appear inAlexandriacourt on September 7, 2011.

 

 

 

(North Glengarry) – On July 17, 2011, SD&G OPP commenced an investigation into reports of threats made by a male party towards his ex common-law spouse. Further investigation revealed the suspect was also in breach of a Probation order set from a previous police related incident.

 

The 31yr old male fromAlexandriawas arrested and is charged with;

 

 

 

  • o Utter Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm
  • o Breach of Probation

 

 

 

He was held in custody, pending a court (bail) appearance today (July 18, 2011) inCornwall.

 

 

 

Drug Offences:

 

 

 

(South Glengarry) – On July 15, 2011, at approximately 8:00pm, an SD&G OPP officer had the occasion to stop a vehicle for speeding on Highway 401,SouthGlengarryTownship. The stop resulted in the seizure of a small amount of suspected marihuana from a male passenger in the vehicle.

 

Joshua SILVA, 22 ofTorontois charged with;

 

  • o Possession of a Controlled Substance

 

 

 

He is scheduled to appear inAlexandriacourt September 11, 2011.

 

 

 

(North Glengarry) – On July 15, 2011, at approximately 11:00pm, an SD&G OPP officer had the occasion to intercept a group of youths onDominion Street in the Town ofAlexandria. This resulted in the arrest of a 16yr old male fromAlexandria found to be in possession of a small amount of suspected marihuana. He is charged with;

 

  • o Possession of a Controlled Substance

 

 

 

He is scheduled to appear inAlexandriacourt on September 7, 2011.

 

 

 

Impaired Operation:

 

 

 

(South Stormont) – On July 16, 2011, at approximately 8:30pm, SD&G OPP officers conducting Reduce Impaired Drivers Everywhere (RIDE) spot checks on the Long Sault Parkway,SouthStormontTownship. The stop of a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) resulted in the arrest of the male driver, who was under the influence of alcohol.

 

Jose LEIVA BONILLA, 31 of Sainte-Zotique PQ is charged with;

 

  • o Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • o Exceed 80 Milligrams Blood Alcohol Content

 

 

 

He is scheduled to appear in Cornwall court on July 28, 2011.

 

 

TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT

 

 

 

The following drivers were intercepted and charged by SD&G OPP officers over the past weekend for excessive speeds resulting in licence and vehicle seizures.

 

  • o Male driver travelling at 130km/h in a posted 80km/h (Construction) zone on Highway 401, South Glengarry Twp.
  • o Female driver travelling at 138km/h in a posted 80km/h zone on County Road 17, South Glengarry Twp.
  • o Male driver travelling at 169km/h in a posted 1000km/h zone on Highway 401, South Stormont Twp.
  • o Male driver travelling 108km/h in a posted 55km/h zone on the Long Sault Parkway, South Stormont…the driver overtook the police vehicle

 

 

 

(South Glengarry) – On July 16, 2011, at approximately 8:00am, an SD&G OPP officer had the occasion to stop a vehicle on Highway 401, South Glengarry Township. The stop resulted in several infractions committed by the male driver.

 

Joel MELVILLE, 27 of Toronto is charged with several Provincial Offences, including;

 

  • o Drive While Under Suspension (2 counts)
  • o Use Plates not Authorized for Vehicle
  • o Operate a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance

 

The vehicle was seized and the accused is scheduled to attend Alexandria court on August 23, 2011

  1. More than 58,000 Canadians were arrested in 2010 for marijuana possession. The year prior it was slightly over 40,000. Marijuana accounts for more than half of drug arrests. info: Statistics Canada.
