CFN – Last week I discussed workplace learning and the individual’s responsibility towards their personal growth and career development that adds value to both the organization and the individual.
Creating S.M.A.R.T. objectives which will provide you with tools to take charge of your own learning and own career.
Select: Look ahead two to three years. What is it important to your company’s success? What skills do you need to contribute to that success? Gather the information you need by talking to individuals in the company, read up on trends in the industry, and learn about the competitors. Then select your learning goal.
Map: You need a learning path and it requires time and energy to put together. Without a plan, your learning becomes accidental rather than strategic. A map will provide you with measureable progress. Create short, medium and long term goals. How long do you need to accomplish each goal? How will you know when you are successful?
Action: “Thought without action is useless”. Set your plan in motion. Start with your first specific goal. Can you complete it in one week? What is the next goal on the plan.
Review: Plan a meeting with yourself! Evaluate and review your plan on a regular basis. What have you accomplished? How did you accomplish it? When you evaluate what you have learned, the learning stays with you. Make any amendments that are required.
Target: Making use of your new skills and abilities, incorporate these and target your next learning goal. You will progress and discover strengths you did not know you had, and areas of development you were unaware of. Target your next learning goal.
The S.M.A.R.T. objectives are found in Calhoun W. Wick’s book – The Learning Edge.
