Councilor Rivette Files Official Complaint after Bully Council Session – We file complaint against the Standard Free Holder and Mayor Kilger – Gong Show REDUX

CFN – I have very thick skin.   I can handle insult; but at a certain point I have ask why a long time newspaper like the Standard Free Holder prints some of what it does about us; or neglects to?  Why the low blows and disrespect?

They know we’re an online newspaper.  We are not a blog or a website per se.   We beat them in traffic across the board and we don’t have to rely on the Phillipines or India for our traffic.

According to Alexa.com the Free Holder only gets 59% of its traffic from Canada; a number we exceed by over 20%.

So today it was most disturbing to read their coverage of Councilor Andre Rivette filing a complaint about the City Ambushing him and bullying him over the interview he gave The Cornwall Free News.

….. included an interview he had done with a local website.

“It arose out of an interview he gave to a … blog,” he explained. “It had some inaccuracies and it identified a senior member of our administration, in that it gave rise to my including it in the agenda.”

The second quote is from Mayor Kilger to Cheryl Brink.    She also knows we’re an ONLINE NEWSPAPER.    Now I’m not throwing a tizzy here, but are you really sharing “news” when you are omitting or not attributing source?

Here’s Councilor Rivette’s interview.

And kudos to the good councilor for stepping up.  Far too many on council are not, and in the end many of them will be tarred and feathered by the public simply because of their reluctance to stand up for what’s right.

In the meanwhile we have filed an official complaint with the Free Holder and Mayor Kilger asking them for an apology and correction.

Not holding my breath, but again this is a sign of the culture of some in this town.   Bullying, abuse, and low roading.

Is this what Cornwall Ontario stands for?  I think and hope not.

  1. Does the bullying ever stop in this city? He has a point and states it so he’s guilty because the woman who knows where the bodies are buried and those who grovel at her knees in fear agree. They ambush him for speaking publicly. The City does all business in camera. Millions of dollars secretly paid out. A few families run the City and pay for the candidacy of their favourites. The Freeholder will of course back the City in this argument and only the Cornwall Free News will follow the truth.

  2. Kudo’s to the Cornwall Free News for bringing us this story. Stand up and fight the bullies! Andre Rivette has the testicular fortitude to stand up against these bullies, kudo’s to him too. Hopefully the citizens of Cornwall will finally understand what is happening at City Hall and vote these bullies OUT in the next election.

  3. Well done!

I think a fair comment can be made about bullying here. When bullying first came to light it was meant to protect people being singled out and well bullied. Odd considering the word bully derived from a Dutch word meaning sweetheart.

I think great care needs to be taken here, are we pushing our own interpretation of bullying into a business practice. We can play with the semantics of any situation to get the results we want, but is the true definition, in this case bullying, what is being challenged here?

A few weeks back a comment was made here about the credibility of some councillors and or city staff. Could that not be interpreted as bullying?

Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior manifested by the use of force or coercion to affect others, particularly when the behavior is habitual and involves an imbalance of power. It can include verbal harassment, physical assault or coercion and may be directed repeatedly towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability. The “imbalance of power” may be social power and/or physical power. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a “target”.

I am not sure about our situation here, but is anti bullying a law or a statute? I think here in Canada under UCC there is a difference and a statute cannot be enforced in the courts.

Let’s not turn anti bullying into another personal podium. We are already misrepresenting the hiring practices at the hospital. We have turned s simple discriminatory requirement into a whole language issue, therefore clouding the main issue and making it much simpler to enforce discrimination.

  4. As I was driving in this morning another idea came to mind, gotta love morning coffee

In this article concerns were made about tax payers paying for poor business ethics and practices causing tax payers 1.4 Million dollars. I am not for that at all and believe it should come directly from the pockets of those committing said indiscretions. None of us would receive tax dollars for any of our wrong doings.
However here we have a monumental case of irony. It shows here both the newspaper and Mr. Rivette are filing a complaint. We have Mr Rivette filing to the city, and the news site to both the Freeholder and the city. How much of our tax dollars will go to pay for addressing these filings?
We don’t want them using our tax dollars yet we put them in a situation where we know it will be done.
I would suggest here rather than two independent people/businesses filing complaints combine your efforts stand behind one complaint and set precedence. Right now you are only clouding the waters and it WILL cost tax payers more money. Once they set precedence then we begin chipping away.

  5. I wonder how interested people would be in kowing that certain councillors, managers of other media outlets, Kinsmen member’s and several community group representatives have banded together to try and remove The Cornwall Free News from Cornwall because it has drawn light to a few unethical practices?

Andre Rivette was bashed because Council and Administration have been “told” not to talk to the Cornwall Free News! Hence, Jamie’s bullying comments!

Here’s an idea……….. stop hiding the city’s indiscretions and get to work! Also, start looking the mirror and start doing what is right! Everyone should be treated equally and without bias………….rules are rules, results are results and honesty comes naturally! Too many have accepted the fact that they need to “go with the flow” or you will be outcast by the OLD BOYS CLUB!

  6. Good for you Coun. Andre Rivette. Honesty is where its at. Communicating with your constituents by being transparent is wonderful to see. Keep up the good work.

  7. I agree with you 100%. Tammy 😉
