Ontario Provincial Police News Portal [STORMONT DUNDAS and GLENGARRY] Ice-Safety 2012-12-24

(SD&G) – The O.P.P. S.A.V.E. Team would like to remind everyone that even though there is ice on area lakes and rivers and it may look good, it’s not safe.

No ice is without some risk
• Ice Fishing, walking, and cross country skiing (one person) – all require at least 4” of new, clear, hard ice.
• One snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle requires at least 5” of new clear hard ice.
• One vehicle, car or small pick-up requires at least 8” to 12” of new clear hard ice.
• One vehicle or medium truck requires at least 12” to 15” of new clear hard ice.

Always, check the ice in several places before traveling onto it. Wear a floatation suit, and carry, ice picks. If you go onto the ice be prepared to get wet and cold and rescue yourself. Don’t endanger anyone else. If you are travelling in a group, keep good spacing so that if one person goes into the water the others don’t.

SNOWMOBILE OPERATORS SHOULD ALSO USE CAUTION WITH FIRST SNOW.

The Ontario Provincial Police would like to remind snowmobile operators that when the snow falls there are many hazards to watch out for. There is not a solid base of snow on the ground yet, which means, rocks, culverts and other debris are not covered, but they may be hidden by fresh snow making it difficult to see them.

Last year there were 13 snowmobile fatalities in Ontario. Treat snowmobiles with respect and use common sense.

 Always wear an approved helmet.
 Never mix alcohol and snowmobiles.
If you are operating a snowmobile with over the legal limit of alcohol in your body you will face the same penalties as if you were driving your car and you could lose your driver’s licence.

 The maximum speed on trails is 50 km/hr.
Now is the time to make sure you are ready.
1. Read your owner’s manual and know your machine.
2. Check your documents.
• Make sure your licence validation sticker isn’t expired.
• Make sure your insurance is valid.
• Don’t forget your trail pass.
3. Check to make sure that your machine is in good running order.
4. Put together a safety kit and put it on your machine.
If you see an impaired snowmobiler, call 911 and report them to police. Please be careful and have a safe snowmobiling experience.
