CFN Exposes a Little Group of Trolls in Cornwall Ontario Who Want You To Stop Reading Us by Jamie Gilcig 29/1/14

nm fbCORNWALL Ontario – Sometimes you have to out a troll clearly.   On the left is one Nicholas MacNaughton.  Mr. MacNaughton is a special kind of troll.

His hatred has lasted several years now and his energy in attacking CFN and myself seem to be his occupation.  It probably started when he started to date a particular young lady with a history related to a City Councilor that isn’t a CFN fan.

When he, like many others, fell for our April Fool’s joke a few years ago he went prattling on facebook about how awesome it is that CFN was gone, etc.

I handled him like I would a heckler and he lost his marbles to the point of telling people that he was going to physically harm me.  In fact I was cornered by himself, the female in question and her mom at an event at the Port Theatre.  It was a bit surreal, but no physical blows were struck and I didn’t lay charges.

However this troll started to go after my clients. In fact, one, lawyer Milena Cardinal, specifically told me that at a lunch while he was working for CIBC as a mortgage broker, that he implied that she’d get more business if she’d drop CFN.   She did that shortly after and ended up getting a $25K Heart of the City loan for her office on Adolphus Street which certainly isn’t in a commercial zone that the plan was intended for.   Ms Cardinal shared that Mr. MacNaughton had admitted to her that he in fact had gone to several businesses and suggested the same, that they should dump their advertising.

Irony is that when Nick was in trouble and upset with the Freeholder he came to CFN for help and we successfully assisted him.

Now he seems to have his undergarments in a bind and is on the war path again.

Nicholas MacNaughton FB block DEC 29 2014 1 with likes

In Cornwall this sort of thing means he’s trying to get something from the cliques, usually a job or gig of some sort.   Brownie points, like when Gaye Adams took a run at me during the election.

As after reading the page of drivel I thought, what if I shared with CFN viewers the list of people that subscribe to Mr. MacNaughton’s thought process and what businesses they own or where they work?

Recently we came to the defense of the Vincent family’s ice rink.  As of print time nearly 2,000 people signed our petition, over 3,000 voted in our poll(with 96% wanting to support the rink) and over 2,500 liked our story on facebook.

It’s amazing when people work together and tragic that such a small group can cause so much grief for the community.  Clearly reading the list below you can see some that have an agenda as they are with competing media. Competing for eye balls and for ad dollars.   Some in the list are just along for the ride and following a mob.

Clearly this move by Mr. MacNaughton and his supporters isn’t working at that level, but if you own a small restaurant or business and  you get a few phone calls or complaints you just might not advertise or pull an ad.

We’ve seen that with a few small businesses.  Sadly one is closing this January because these little trolls aren’t a solution.  Most aren’t even clients except rarely for a bit after they get their way.

So here is the list of those that clicked like so far for Mr. MacNaughton’s little theory.   We are not advocating boycotting them, but I think it’s fair that the public know who it is that’s trying to destroy CFN with a campaign of bullying and lies and those that support them.

Mr. MacNaughton states that he owns McNaughty Performance.  Not sure if he’s still at CIBC?  We’ll only be posting what is public information or what we know first hand.

What do you think dear  CFN viewers?  Is it time to stand up to strange and naughty behavior like that exhibited by this group?  What triggers this sort of mob madness?  Is it ignorance? Jealousy?  Trying to gain brownie points?
Why rip down in a community instead of work together and build everyone up?   Frankly the biggest action that can be done in this city is if local business kicked back and bought ads on CFN to stand up to mobs like this.  You now are seeing a glimpse of the minority that think and behave in this manner.  They now are getting their few moments of fame on CFN which maybe what some of them simply wanted in the first place.
This month, and it’s not over, CFN has had 67,392 unique vistors (over 40% from Cornwall) 244,042 visits comprising 1,256,006 human page views.  Clearly not all of Cornwall or the region agree with this motley crue’s opinion.   The question is simply then why not ignore CFN if you hate it that much?  Why go to lengths to try and coerce or force others?  Isn’t that a li’l crazy?
And the funniest thing is that Mr. MacNaughton and his supporters actions will ultimately give CFN more viewers.  Congrats Todd & Denis.  Keep up the good work for TC  Media!

  1. Good informative article.

Strange little group and “members.” Some people never learn it’s best to work together, not pull apart.

  2. Just looking at his picture, doesn’t look too sharp, I wouldn’t worry about him.

  3. Is that picture of him or his tranny?

  4. Jamie, as a “journalist” (if I can call myself one), as much as I agree and see the fact that you are trying to make a point, I find it a little hard to believe that the entire city is going to boycott or refrain from doing business with our entire city. By trying to boycott more than 200-300 or perhaps more local businesses that offer some very essential services and products in our city, have a combined experience of HUNDREDS of years in our city and still going strong all mentioned in an article naming them will serve no purpose in my opinion. That would be insinuating that we will never buy groceries, put gas in our cars, eat out, buy clothing, drink coffee or LIVE for that matter because, as you very well know, everyone on this list (and those yet to put their name on it) plays a key part in our city and combined, you are now involving the entire city, perhaps even yourself. As you know, more voices will be added to this list and it would be impossible to avoid them all in my opinion. It’s a testament seeing all these businesses, names and community people coming together on this page (and of course more yet to come). It only stands to confirm the fact that people are banding together to support the fact they believe in a common goal – NO, not to boycott or shut down or avoid CFN or yourself Jamie, that’s not the whole point here and I think that’s what most people are missing, including you. These people are banding together to avoid the hatred, name-calling, bullying and other negativity that has been surrounding it and many other people lately. It’s not a reflection of CFN – I have always stated and actually commended CFN on a few occasions for exposing some truths. People are upset, angry and irritated by the slew of insults that have been said and I will admit Jamie that many of those were on the CFN site which is where the hatred originated from. Again, not blaming anyone, just a fact. It’s not to say I agree with Nick, nor to say I agree with you or anyone for that matter. As you and others stated, freedom of speech is a right we all have, whether anyone agrees with our comments or not. My main argument here is that I AGREE that the negativity should stop and as adults, we should all know better. As some of your followers have stated, “It’s best to work together, not pull apart”.

Carol I get that you mean well, but the bottom line is the bottom line no matter how much you spin it. In once sentence what are you trying to say? There is no free pass for Nick or anyone that subscribes to what he suggests. Even if he’s not successful the point is that his behavior should not be condoned at any level. That’s why Cornwall can’t get over the 50K mark in population.

I simply want to expose that behavior and make this a better city for all of us, including myself and even the naughty trolls. I get that you’re in a sticky spot, but you also work for media that has one owner in a hate group, the other owner’s hubby in the same group, and a criminal writing for them who made false allegations to police about myself. That’s what the media you chose to work for represents.

That puts you on shaky ground. And in life we sometimes have to take positions, even if our friends and loved ones don’t always agree or support those.

As for working together I’m proud of what I’ve done and actually be allowed to do in this wacky town because I’ve actually been blocked from helping by the cliques and weirdos. It’s time to confront the petty trolls and bullies and stop this type of behavior. We need to work together and move this town forward and if some people like the Naughty Trolls want to be left behind that’s their choice.

  6. Quickly before I answer – I am not “employed” by anyone, I am self-employed and do work for myself but I choose to write for a media I believe in with no regards to anyone’s background, association with any groups or links to any criminal records as you speak, just as I choose to comment on CFN with disregard to any claims against you as well. 🙂 So, hmmmHmmm… to answer you in one sentence only? Well, it may be a run-on sentence and not properly formatted but here goes: I agree with your wish to “simply expose that behaviour and make this a better city for all of us, including myself and even the naughty trolls” but do remember, in some people’s opinions, you are among those considered to be one of these nasty trolls so be careful what you wish for – by exposing them, you also expose yourself.

  10. Interesting read, I really don’t want to sound negative but is it just me or is Cornwall getting to be more and more immature?? There is no doubt in my mind that media is a very difficult place to work and criticism comes from all corners. I am going to say that a lot if not most people who liked his comment are not part of a “big” group attacking. I am not taking sides as I follow CFN. I take what I like out of it and like you said what I don’t like I ignore. Best of luck in solving these issues!

  11. As irrational as Mr. Frost has behaved I doubt that this was him posting.

Rob in this day of social media words and images spread really fast. People whose opinion nobody would ever hear can be heard. I think the biggest loss for our community is that more people have never read our Vision and Mission statements and taken advantage of CFN. If people have the perspective that CFN is my voice it’s simply because so many have refused for various reasons to participate. We’re a very open platform and have proven that repeatedly over the years.

Hopefully 2015 will see an improvement in Cornwall, especially now that we’ve seen a change at City Hall. Even a small improvement would be better than no improvement. Every journey starts with those first steps.

  17. Jamie thank you for posting those names and I wish to God that you posted about Mayor Leslie’s daughter because I WOULD NEVER EVER HAVE RECOMMENDED HER FATHER FOR MAYOR AND I CAN LITERALLY KICK MYSELF IF I WASN’T THIS SORE AFTER MY HUMOUNGOUS WALK TO THE LIBRRY AS WELL AS SHOPPING. I FEEL SO MIGHTY HORRBLE NOT KNOWING AND RECOMMENDING THIS MAN. WHERE IS BOB? I WOULD PUT BOB BACK IN AFTER KNOWING THIS. I am so mighty upset now Jamie that I could spit nails. We do so little shopping in Cornwall and I don’t know these people at all but only the family names of some ring out because of me going to high school with their elders. I refuse to recommend anyone for mayor, etc. from now on. Anybody who is against you Jamie is also against myself. Thank you for the list and I wish that I knew that long before now.

  18. HOLY JUMPING JOSEPH! Pierre Bellemare. This is the family that owns Farm Boy. Oh boy I am going to cut a lot of my ties going to Farm Boy here in Ottawa because they own the whole shoot match. I will shop elsewhere thank you for telling me Jamie. I went to school with one of the Bellemare’s and NO TANKS NO MORE FARM BOY FOR US! I only recognized a few surnames but not the people – I have been away for a long time and thank the Good Lord that I left and no more Cornwall at all for the rest of my life and my children do not want it either. Cornwall will never grow. There are plenty of seniors here in Ottawa and other big cities and they all want no part of it at all.

One of those on the list sent in this message via facebook and then blocked me so I could not reply. Again, these folks liked a comment clearly supporting a conspiracy to force people not to share or view CFN. All we did was post the list of those that agreed with that message. We didn’t suggest any action or stoop to such vulgarity. We blocked out certain words in the image.

  20. Author

and from what appears to be the boyfriend of one of those on the list…

  21. Jules….you can’t lay blame at the feet of parents, siblings, etc for what their family members do.

  22. Jamie those are the childish pranks on Facebook and what these idiots don’t know is that everything that they say employers look at that and make notes and gradually fire them. It has been said many times over the radio here in Ottawa about Facebook. I am happy that I left Facebook and that it was something to help me out with my hobbies – stupid me for thinking that and it turned out to be a gossip column of idiots. Your paper is the only one that is good in Cornwall and the rest is for defacating on and mulching and washing windows and I still would not buy it and never have in all my entire life. My mom wanted absolutely nothing with Seaway News being delivered to her house and called them telling them not to deliver it there. Now that she is deceased it must be delivered to whoever owns the house now – not me because I would be calling up the company telling them where they could stick it and the same with the other toilet paper of record – SF.

  23. Hugger I sure am putting blame on family for what their siblings are doing and I will officially at this very moment cut my ties with Farm Boy. My words are going to get around here in Ottawa as well. Everyone finds it way to expensive. NO MORE EVER AGAIN! NEVER EVER AGAIN! I am completely through with Farm Boy for life. I mean every word that I say and I have said that many times before.

  24. Author

Now Jules, Farm Boy is a great store. I shop there myself too. This boycotting nonsense is silly. Please do not boycott anyone.

  25. Admin / Jamie….we agree on something.

Jules….how can you blame the mayor for something his adult daughter does?

  26. Author

Hugger please don’t get Jules going as I then have to moderate even more comments! 🙂

  31. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. been reading this way too long and have better things to do with my time, it becomes less and less interesting every day and life is too short to dwell on pointless talk of such miniscule matters. it seems as though no one has anything of real importance to say anymore, stop your mindless quibble and get on with your day

  32. NO ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ AFTER HRS OF SLEEP DEPRAVATION, i fear any more involvement of myself in conversations of this nature could only become more corrosive towards the betterment of life and the reducton of physical and or mental anguish directly evolved, and or to derive to the extent an unusable and lessend end. resultant in the tasks it was originally managed for, each which becomes embellished as each moment passes. time will be the teller of truths as it is the death of our society and physicallity, and the mental imagery of our future generations is affixed to a dismembered social contact as we enjoy today known only to us as interactice journalism where terms and conditions are evicerated by words of abuse and awed by its passengers while ceasors thumb decides the fate of all concerned with one fateful gesture and the clergy rides to coat tails screaming more more more untruths will only stand to make our words and wishes more evident

  33. So you say that it was your loyal CFN followers who got our mayor elected, but you couldn’t even get elected yourself by your own loyal followers? Get help!

  34. Author

It’s been an interesting social experiment. People don’t realize that many read our facebook posts and impressions are made. There are a lot of businesses in Cornwall I won’t step foot in to even try and sell an ad because of what I’ve read or even worse, people ask me if I’ve read.

Again, we have to change the culture in Cornwall. We need to reward and support those with merit and we need to leave in the past those that are incapable of that. Cronyism lowers the bar. At some point that bar is lowered to the point that a community falls behind others. That’s what’s happened in Cornwall.

    Only we can change that.

  35. Admin / Jamie. You think that can be accomplished? From what I’ve seen the changes needed won’t happen. Cornwall is stuck in neutral.

  36. Author

Hugger I’m an optimist and frankly I have seen some change over the last few years. I think I’ve shown people that you can make a difference and effect change. Just ask our former mayor and some of his yes men that are no longer at City Hall. We’ve beat Wal-Mart for Cornwall. We’ve saved beavers in Guindon Park. We’ve helped about 30 people with issues that never made the paper. Local media have changed to adapt to CFN’s success locally.

So yes, we can change if we want. It doesn’t happen by waving a magic wand. It’s hard work and the bad guys just don’t back down without a fight.

  37. Perhaps. It’s a slow change that some others that have posted refuse to accept and move on S-L-O-W-L-Y.

As for WalMart they are still here, just bigger with a corporate welfare handout. Corporate welfare will never end. If a city / town says no to the request they simply move on to the next city / town who will accept what they want.

  38. Author

No, Hugger, regarding the school bus drivers Wal-mart wanted to move.

  39. That’s strange because every other Walmart with the school bus drivers doing their charity work they’ve been allowed to use the parking lot. Like I said before Cornwall is definitely a strange little city.

  40. The funniest are the ones asking how you have time to sit at your keyboard and comment all day, like they do…for free. They are writing your master play.
    .
I may be able to copy and paste a PHd, “The Interaction of Social Media, Fluoride, and Mass Hysteria: Rantings of a Post-Industrial Psyche” from your hatters. And by hatters, I mean mad.
    .
What’s with “post from ex-wives” nonsense?

  41. Author

Yes, wow ,many miss the irony of their deeds. For example Mr. MacNaughton’s attempt to silence CFN and those that clicked like have resulted in more facebook likes than we originally quoted in the story and over 7,500 page views and counting.

It’s thinking like that and attitudes like that which have kept us at 46,000 for far too long.

  43. Changes take time.

The “corruption” has slowed to a dribble.

Name me a city that doesn’t have corruption in some form.

  44. That’s the thing about Social Media, the bullies biggest weapon is the keyboard and they’re not afraid to use it. I think it really shows a persons character by joining hate groups and posting lies all to cause pain. I dream of a world where we could laugh and get along instead of trying to hurt people using a computer. Jamie I hope 2015 is better for you and that the bullies finally retire and go about their lives. Cheers! 🙂

  45. Author

I tend to agree Furtz. Within the last 30 days I’ve been called a gay, then bisexual misogynist that makes unwanted sexual advances on male customers in coffee shops and harasses puck bunnies. Today, as a friend quoted best, writing about Randy Sauve’s latest diatribe about myself where he and his friends are actually calling me a bully it appears,

“I don’t know what to say or think about these people. everything’s so perverted “

Although I swear they only did that because they in some way where hoping I’d do another list story like this one. We live in very strange and sad times when you look at how many of those names were so quick to like the bizarre ramblings of Randy and not sign a petition and pull together to help save a kids hockey rink.

And that’s Cornwall right there and the cliques and wannabees that get left behind. I’m just grateful that these people out themselves publicly so more of us can know who’s who. Imagine, someone who lives near Toronto now is sharing that opinion of our city, or at least those on that page making fools of themselves…

  46. I’m all for positive change and all, but what is the deal with wanting the population of Cornwall to go up? More population can only bring more crime, as there are hardly enough jobs as it is with every place closing or cutting staff. The people to bring the population up are likely not job relocates or even educated/skilled. And no one is going to put up money to build anything here that require skills/higher education. I’m getting my kids used to the idea that they will likely have to move away from us someday in order to have a good job.

  47. {MODERATED} Mr. Oliver there is a difference between sharing an opinion and making statements of fact that are not true. That is not what this platform is about. I’m sure there are others that might allow such comments.
