Police Release Video Footage of Person of Interest Relating to Vehicle Fire

15-26202

Detectives from the General Crime Unit have obtained and are releasing video surveillance stills of a person of interest in relation to a suspected vehicle arson that occurred earlier in the week.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on August 31 emergency responders were dispatched and soon arrived on scene in the 200-block of Wilson Street, between Compton Street and Weller Avenue, to observe a 2008 black Pontiac Torrent on fire. The rear half of the vehicle was destroyed.

Evidence on scene leads investigators to suspect an accelerant was left on the roadway beside or under the vehicle. At the time of the incident witnesses heard what sounded like teenagers outside and in the vicinity of the vehicle.

Video surveillance footage of Wilson Street on the same day and time frame and in the same area of the damaged vehicle show an individual carrying what appears to be two bags. As there is no direct evidence linking this person to the vehicle fire police are referring to him or her as a person of interest whom they would be interested in speaking to. Detectives are hoping a member of the public recognizes the individual or the person recognizes him or herself and can come forward to advise of their actions on the evening in question.

Good Samaritans Assaulted by Cyclist

15-26567

Rather than receiving thanks two males who went to the assistance of a 37-year-old who fell off his bicycle were instead attacked.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. on September 2 the accused was cycling up Princess Street the wrong way, with no light on his bicycle and was swerving in the lane. At the Clergy Street intersection he was seen crashing his bike into a garbage can on the southeast corner and fell to the ground.

The two victims, 17 and 19 years of age, saw the incident and crossed Princess Street to help the fallen male. However, when the accused got up he became aggressive towards the males and while yelling began swinging his bicycle at them, striking them in the shin, stomach and legs.

The victims attempted to distance themselves from the accused by crossing back over to the north side of Princess Street. However, the accused continued to follow them and swing his bicycle in their direction. He then began kicking at an unrelated parked vehicle, causing a dent and approximately $300 in damage.

Kingston Police were called and a patrol officer observed the accused cycling down Princess Street near Sydenham Street, where he crashed his bicycle a second time and again fell to the ground. His injuries were not serious and he was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he was held overnight in cells to attend a bail hearing the following day. Police believe the use of illicit drugs may have been a factor in the accused’s behaviour. He is being charged with two counts of Assault with a Weapon, one count of Mischief under $5,000 and one count of Breach of Probation.

Suspect in Theft from Vehicle Captured on Surveillance Camera

15-25476

Detectives from the General Crime Unit are releasing a neighbour’s surveillance footage showing a male suspect in a west end theft from a vehicle.

At 1:44 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26 a young Caucasian male wearing a light-coloured hoodie and in possession of what appears to be a light-coloured backpack with darker trim entered multiple vehicles on Lisbon Place off of Crossfield Avenue. An Apple iPod was stolen. It does not appear the vehicles were locked. This is a good reminder that most reported thefts from vehicles occur on the owner’s property. Always secure your vehicle, bring in valuables and hide other items like GPS devices, charge cords, loose change out of sight.
