Lipsense…is it worth the hype?
Before I get to my personal opinion of the product let’s start off with a bit of background information on the company and the product itself!
So the company itself which is called SeneGence began in April of 1999 launching their first product which is LipSense. I know crazy right? I had no idea this gem had been around for almost 18 years! When it first became available they offered 6 different liquid lipstick shades, a moisturizing lip gloss and a product remover. Today they offer over 50 different lip shades several glosses and since you can actually make different shades by layering different colours together the possibilities are endless! GeneSence now offers anything from skin care to make up!
The product is guaranteed to last anywhere from 4-18 hours some say it lasts even longer. Unlike most liquid lipsticks this one is a two step process and by that I mean you need a lip colour of your choice and then you have to follow with one of their several glosses to seal the product and it literally will not transfer! Not on cups, not on clothes, not on bae, not on anything and I know sceptics out there are probably reading this and thinking that it’s some sort of gimmick and to be honest I had my doubts too.
Since it’s not sold in stores and it’s an MLM business (multi-level marketing) in plain language you can only buy it from a sales rep and I know we’ve all had experiences and have been bombarded by a lot of sales reps from different companies usually claiming the products they were selling were amazing and it gets to be annoying sometimes when you’re constantly be asked to try a product or have a home party trust me I get it!
I had a friend in my makeup group send it to me and truthfully I probably wouldn’t be writing this right now but I truly feel like it’s a really amazing product that I’ve grown to really love! The sales of lipsense alone in 2017 made more in sales then 2014,2015 and 2016 combined and that says a lot for a product!
I’m actually really happy that she was kind enough to gift me the starter kit which is recommended and with that you get a lip colour of your choice, a gloss and the remover.
I want to make it clear that I was never asked to review it or write about it. She just knew I loved makeup and one day it arrived in my mail box and I thought why not give it a try and put it to the test and I ended up doing that live in my makeup group so we could all see if it really worked the way it claims it’s supposed to !
It ended up really surprising me no matter how hard I rubbed my lips no matter how hard I kissed the back of my hand there was zero colour coming off and at the end of this article I decided to add a demo of me using it so you can see it for yourself and come to your own conclusion!
I myself just like a lot of you reading this have our favourite brands and tend to stick to things we buy in store and to be honest I was kind of getting over liquid lipsticks in general because they can be so drying and tend to flake off, but with the most recommended gloss being the glossy gloss it really ended up doing the opposite and left my lips moisturized and that’s because it actually contains shea butter and vitamin E.
There is a method to this madness so let’s go over it. When applying it the lip colour you’ll need to do 3 layers and yes that sounds like a lot of product but it’s not because it’s very thin so no it’s not going to leave your lips looking cakey!
And the reason for the 3 layers is this:
1st layer: Touches the skin and the PH will begin to break down the first and the fastest.
2nd layer:Protected from the skin’s PH from the first layer and from everyday factors.
3rd layer:Protects the second layer from friction, saliva and the natural environment
And then the gloss seals everything together.
You’re going to notice that it has somewhat of an alcohol smell to it don’t be alarmed it’s a cosmetic grade that is completely safe and used in many other beauty products, however you’ll notice the smell go away after a few seconds.
Now when you’re applying the layers do not overlap. Apply it from one side of your lip to the other and let it dry for 5 seconds and do not touch your lips together while doing this repeat this step 3 times and then apply your gloss.
I prefer the matte look so that’s what I generally use.
Now for the first week you may notice some flaking don’t be discouraged it actually works as a lip exfoliator and removes the buildup from all the other lip products you use.
Another way to help this process is to exfoliate your lips before applying the product. Make sure you have absolutely nothing on your lips wiping them with a bit of water and a face cloth will do.
The reason that it’s important is because other products can get in the way of the performance of the product. Make sure to give it a good shake before application. It’s also recommended to use the glossy gloss on your lips before bed to nourish them and keep them extra soft.
I really love that you don’t have to reapply the colour you do however need to reapply the gloss throughout your day but other then that it’s literally not coming off until you want it off!
Once you’re ready to remove the product you can take the oops remover. Apply it all over your lips let it sit for two minutes and rub your lips together while you’re waiting to really work the product in and then wipe it off with a wet face cloth.
A lot of people actually use the oops remover when they get a little product outside of the lip line so yes having the colour and the gloss is necessary there are however other products you can use to remove it such as the clear orange neutrogena bar of soap or witch hazel.
I’m sure there are others but these are ones I know for sure work. Another awesome fact is that one tube of lipsense is the equivalent to 4 lipsticks so it’s going to last you a long time which is definitely a plus!
So with all that being said I already have a list of colours that I can’t wait to try!
