Seniors Situation Room. By Dawn Ford – Covid-19 Stay @ Home Restrictions = New Hobby Opportunities

JANUARY 24, 2021 – With the new ‘Stay At Home’ restrictions, it is a good time for hobbies or to learn new ones when we have to stay indoors so much. When we were kids one of our favourite hobbies was stamp collecting. Some seniors still have the ones they collected as kids and teens which must be interesting to see today. It was a time also when collecting the stamps for the albums, to learn some history and geography of the countries and people involved.

Other people are finding new hobbies. A couple I know are feeding birds at feeders and taking photos, which is a delightful hobby for them, now amateur photographers. Another is trying out some Paint by Number kits and feels as if she might now try some watercolour painting. She is surprised because painting wasn’t something she would have tried before. Another friend is learning to play the guitar. Another one taking a go at crossword puzzles. So, new hobbies and old to keep us busy

The 211 phone line is available when you aren’t sure where to turn for help about community and social services. Also their web site is available at www.211ontario. ca. Their phone lines are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is free and confidential. The brochure I have on this service says that they can help you in over 150 languages and that you will be speaking to a person, not a machine. Give them a call or go on line for more information.

Here is a photo of the world’s youngest chef, Gabriella, age 20 months +, great granddaughter of Bob Katz. Gabriella wanted to help her grandmother make muffins. She ate not one, not two but three of her new creations. That is a sign of a great cook when they will eat their own food. Heaven know what she will be cooking at age 5. Get ready, Grandma.

A friend sent in this article of origin phrases:

“As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths twice a year (May and October). Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn’t wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term ‘big wig’. Today we often use the term, ‘here comes the big wig’ because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy.”

A funny Limerick from a reader:

” There once was a lady named Ferris

Whom nothing could ever embarrass;

“till the bath salts one day

in the tub where she lay

turned out to Plaster of Paris.”

I received the latest Child Haven International newsletter. Go to www.childhaven.ca. to read it. It is beautiful, in colour and very interesting and inspiring.

CHI was founded in 1985 by Fred and Bonnie Cappuchino and Dr. Nat Shah to help orphaned and destitute children in need of food, clothing, health care, education, moral and emotional support. From all the smiling and happy faces of children and staff in the newsletter, they certainly achieved their goal. There are 10 projects in four countries: Tibet in China, Nepal, India and Bangladesh. They also aid and shelter some senior and destitute women and provide education for children not living in one of the Child haven homes.

The Canadian Directors are Dr. Nat Shah, Peter Freud, Bonnie and Fred Cappuccino and Bernadette Caron.

For information on this wonderful loving organization and a list of the Child Haven Support Groups in the USA and Canada go to their website or email Fred at fred@childhaven.ca or call the office in Maxville at : 613-527-2829.

I particularly like this page because everyone looks so happy:

The newsletter always closes with an inspiring quote from Rabindranath Tagore:

“Let me light my lamp, says the star,

And never debate if it will dispel the dark”

I found this interesting old photo from a family album of a street in Cornwall with many parked cars. I have tried to figure out just where it is but can’t. There is a store/building in the center back which might give some one a clue. Any thoughts.???

Great photo of some old cars.

Here is a cute joke from a friend:

Two guys, one young and one old, are pushing their carts in a store when they collide.

The old guy says to the young one, “Sorry about that. I’m looking for my wife and I guess that I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going.”

The young guy says, “That’s ok. It’s a coincidence. I’m looking for my wife also. I can’t find her and I’m getting tired and desperate..”

The old guy asks,” Well, maybe I can help you find her. What does she look like?”

The young guy says, “Well, she is 27 yrs., tall with red hair, blue eyes, is buxom, long legs and is wearing short shorts. What does your wife look like?”

The old guy replies, “Doesn’t matter. let’s look for yours.”

Have a great week, Dawn
