FEBRUARY 12, 2023 – February is Heart and Stroke Month. It is a time not only for fundraising but also to raise awareness of the heart and stroke problems which can be of higher risk apparently for individuals with an unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, unhealthy weight, smoking, stress and excessive use of alcohol and drug use.
Early signs of a heart attack include shortness of breath, chest discomfort, nausea, sweating and may also include discomfort in other parts of the body such as back, neck or jaw. Call 911 right away for help.
The word FAST can help us remember the early signs of a stroke such as:
1) Face- is it drooping?
2) Arms -can you raise both?
3) Speech- is it slurred and /or jumbled?
4) Time – call 911 right away.
A brochure on stroke symptoms said that the faster you act the more of the person can be saved.

Speaking of hearts……it will soon be Valentine’s Day. Just a note to all you males out there – we females LOVE flowers, candy and even a small bottle of our favourite cologne. And dining out…no cooking or dishes…sounds good!!!

The Guiding Movement is changing the younger group’s name from Brownies to Embers. I was a Brownie and didn’t think the name had any other significance other than our uniforms were brown. My Brownie pin has a little brown felt pad under it. Still have it. Other old Brownies and myself are really surprised at the change but in the long run if it will be for the better, so be it.

As kids from the west end of Cornwall we said, “Meet us at the Roxy” so many times to our friends in the east end or other areas. There were always so many great movies to see such as starring Ma and Pa Kettle, The Bowery Boys, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, The Lone Ranger and Tonto, Gene Autrey and we all loved seeing Roy Rogers on Trigger, Dale Evans on Buttercup with their dog Bullet and maybe even a song by The Sons of the Pioneers, “Cool Water.” It was a great place to go and the popcorn was the best.
Ah, those were the days.
