The Stormont Dundas South Glengarry NDP riding association is holding a candidate nomination meeting at the Navy Veterans’ Club, 30 Sixth Street East, on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. The party executive is pleased to endorse Darlene Jalbert, an employee of the Workers’ Health and Safety Centre as their candidate. Ms. Jalbert fought a strong campaign in November 2008 and is primed to run again. Darlene has extensive experience lobbying on Parliament Hill as a member of the Steelworkers union and wants to continue the fight for a better and more caring society from inside the walls of our government.
Darlene’s personal causes dovetail with the party’s in healthcare, pensions and labour issues especially. With the
debate over public healthcare raging in the United States, Canadians are very conscious of serious shortcomings in the Canadian Medicare system, and Darlene wants to be part of the vocal NDP caucus that is working to preserve and strengthen our most important social program. The enhancement of our healthcare system was a special focus of the recent NDP convention in Halifax, which Darlene attended. Two issues affecting seniors are also at the top of Darlene’s policy concerns: seniors’ poverty and the clawback of Candian military pensions. Darlene is enthusiastic and energetic and the party is pleased to join party leader Jack Layton and throw their support behind her.
The keynote speaker for the nomination meeting is one of the band of NDP MPs who swept Northern Ontario in the last election, Carol Hughes. Formerly employed by Probation and Parole Services in Elliot Lake and Youth Justice Services in Sudbury, Ms. Hughes has a long history of labour activism. She served as president of the Algoma Manitoulin District Labour Council and regional representative of the Candian Labour Congress. Currently, Carol is serving as Deputy Critic for First nations, Metis and Inuit Affairs. The bilingual Ms. Hughes will entertain and enlighten the attendance with her insights on Canadian issues and her experiences on Parliament Hill.
