P&G Swiffers Jobs in Brockville – 500 Jobs to Be Lost by 2020 MAY 24, 2017

CORNWALL ONTARIO –  It’s ironic.  Even though Brockville is very different than Cornwall Ontario there’s a certain snooty nasty Eastern Ontario Conservativeness that exists there.   Brockville loves to look down their noses at Cornwall and many times there’s cause.

Ironically it’s how MPP Steve Clark originally cot into power as Brockville mayor (he served for 9 years before becoming MPP) ; fighting off the old ignorant stodginess that he seems to now have embraced after spending his career on the public teat.

However now Brockville is going to go through the pain that Cornwall did when we lost our anchor industries as Proctor and Gamble is shutting down killing 500 irreplaceable jobs over the next three years.  It actually makes little sense as the Canuck Buck is trading highly favorable to the US dollar.  The plant is moving to West Virginia and not Mexico.

While the employees of the Brockville site were informed of the company’s decision at a morning meeting it really isn’t a surprise.

The decision reeks of Trumpism and the call to bring the jobs home as NAFTA talks are about to re-open.

P&G are saying all the right corp speak sayings.

Jeff LeRoy from P&G said:  “We are working hard so that we can find another position for as many employees as possible within P&G if they are willing to relocate.

“There are no guarantees and we can make no promises, but this is the goal we have.

The P&G plant in Belleville apparently is staying open which might be good news for some of the Brockville workers.

The bottom line is that Brockville area politicians knew this was coming, but it seems very little has been done to prepare for the huge job losses which could end up seeing people move away from the city?

  1. Of course Brockville looks down on Cornwall. Quite a number of years when I left school I went to look for work and it was in an industry in Cornwall and who got the job was a girl from Brockville. I had college and dressed for office but she was dressed for industry. I was young back then in the early 70’s era. I never forgot those days at all. I left Cornwall for Ottawa and BINGO! I won!

  2. Fabric softener: Purchase one of those plastic containers with lid from Dollar Store for lunches. Cut sponges in half. Pour 1c fabric softener in a container and 2c water. Put water in first. Put sponges in container of mixture and soak them. Squeeze them and then place in the dryer like a dryer sheet. Replace water and fabric softener every 2-3 months. You will save money.

  3. For the swiffer you only need that long type of mop (no liquid or special paddings) and stick on an ordinary cleanng cloth and if you wish to wet it or put on a scented oil then do so – don’t purchase anything special. The super cleans the elevators, etc. and uses lemon oil and does an excellent job. We have great supers here in my building.

  4. To do windows use a squirt of dish soap in a pail of cold water and this removes grease and dirt. Rinse with cold water and dry. We like to use the sqeegie that you use on cars to rinse. The super told us about that and it works. I have windows to do if the weather gets nice.

  5. Brockville will go through a lot of hurt because PG is a very good company and Trump said that he would be bringing companies back to the US and it sure will hurt Canada and Mexico but he doesn’t care and he is setting out like what he said that he will do. Cut back buying PG products and PG will feel the hurt in the US. I live very frugal and that is the way to live. Cut way back (all Canada)

  6. This is not a surprise on the P & G closing. They have been going through a reorganization for a while now. They have been consolidating, no big shock that the Brockville facility is closing.
