“Stand Up and Take Action” is a worldwide event co-ordinated by the Millennium
Development Goals Campaign. http://www.standagainstpoverty.org/ Now in its fourth
year, this year’s event aims to break last year’s Guinness World Record of 116 million
people for the largest single coordinated mobilization of people in history.
“Stand Up and Take Action” is coordinated in Canada by Make Poverty History. Make
Poverty History is part of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), the world’s
largest anti-poverty coalition, made up of national campaigns in over 100 countries. In
Canada, over a quarter of a million people have signed on to the campaign
Locally, on October 16th, Order of Canada Recipients and founders of Child Haven International, Fred and Bonnie Cappuccino, will address Cornwall’s record breaking crowd as well as Judy Dancause, Executive Director of the Agape Centre, local poverty activists Helene Paquin and Gary Samler and ODSP Action Chair, Denise Vernier. The event will also include a flag raising ceremony to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Poverty on October 17th, and the reading of the Stand Up poverty pledge.
The SDG Coalition for Social Justice is committed to promoting social and economic justice in our community and in particular, acting as a voice for the more than 4, 900 children in SDG alone who live in poverty. We enourage all members of our community to stand up together to acknowledge the lives and efforts of those living in extreme poverty, and to renew their commitment to join them in their struggle to Make Poverty History. Join us in shattering the World Record on October 16th.
