BURNING YAKS! Vent here – The Cornwall Free News new Opinion Forum – Cornwall Ontario – March 26, 2010

Burning Yaks ye all be….or something like that.   I’ve been noticing that some of you have an awful lot you want to talk about so rather then derail some very interesting conversations I’m creating a category called Burning Yaks! where you can share what’s burning you and YAK with the world!

Please note that foul language will not be tolerated unless it’s really impressively used in a very creative manner.  Abuse will also not be tolerated.  If you can’t defend your point or principle without being abusive it’s probably not a very strong point, and of course if you’re boring or obtuse I don’t want that inflicted on our loyal readers who are here in the end to be entertained and informed.

So if you want to go off topic this is your category.   Drop your comments and let the Yakking begin!

  1. This would be the perfect venue for Pastor Tom to continue in. Thanks Jamie, Ill keep an eye on this section. 😉

  2. As a lover of the beautiful beast called the Yak, I strongly object to the name of this forum.
Yak lovers must unite and spare no effort in bringing this forum to its knees! Shame on you Jamie.

    lol 🙂

  4. I’m a dairy cow man myself. I just got back from a two week buying trip in Quebec. Boy, did I visit a lot of barns where I “yaked” with many fine heifers. Fifty of them were brought back to Ontario where they will eventually make a fine contribution to our dairy supply.

I could go into a long diatribe about the precarious future of the family farm, but I’ll spare everyone from having to listen to my wonkish views on agricultural policy.

But thanks for giving me a forum to talk, i.e. yak, in future about my favourite topic: young heifers.

  5. Hello Barn Owl. We keep a small herd of Dexter cattle, and a few sheep and such. It sure does seem that the powers in Toronto are determined to shut down the few remaining “family farms”. It started in the seventies with the milk quota BS, and it continues today with the shutting down of small (local) abattoirs. Can’t even sell eggs anymore. Do you keep Yaks, and what do you think of burning them? Seems cruel to me.

  6. The only one out there is “Ursa the Mother Bear”, don’t mess with her! lol. 😀 But the Yak is right up there. ;D

  7. Hi Furtz A Bootbomb. Burning yaks is cruel and so was the institutional response of the justice system and other public institutions into historical abuse of young people in the Cornwall area. To paraphrase the great American Civil Rights leader, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it might be said that people in these parts have been subjected to great “trials and tribulations”, especially in the aftermath of the Cornwall Public Inquiry.

Dr. King, in his famous I HAVE A DREAM speech circa 1960, sums up my feelings as follows:

No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied
Until justice rolls down like waters, and
    Righteousness like a mighty stream…..

You have been the veterans of creative suffering
Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive…
Knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed….

I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and
Every hill and mountain shall be made low,
The rough places will be made plain, and
The crooked places will be made straight…

  8. I don’t think that I’m qualified to talk about the Cornwall Inquiry. I have noticed however, at other inquiries such as the Walkerton and Ipperwash inquiries, the people with the most to hide just said, under oath, “I don’t recall.” At both those inquires, Mike Harris and those close to him seemed to be suffering from severe memory-loss.

  9. Sorry Barn Owl that I keep changing topics on you. I’ll get back to agriculture soon.

The Seaway Valley Theatre Company (I think that’s the exact name) recently put on a musical theatre production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. This was a local production with local talent. The production was really good!

This illustrates what great talent in the arts that we have in this region. We should do as much as we can to promote local heritage and culture, which should increasingly become a key component of any strategy for Cornwall and the surrounding region’s economic development.

It doesn’t help that Aultsville Theatre charged the Seaway Valley theatre group the full rental rate for the hall to stage FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. This is the same rate that any external, big name act visiting Cornwall would pay for renting Aultsville Theatre!

  10. When I watched Tom Clark interview Hilary Clinton last night she seemed pretty intent on Canada extending it’s stay in Afghanistan, if only in a training role. Clark interviewed Ignatieff immediately afterwards, and Iggy said that maybe, if the terms were spelled out clearly and there was no threat of danger to the troops, as well as a couple of other qualifiers, he would consider the possibility. Then Clinton met with Harper this morning and King Steve supposedly said no, flat out. It’s not that I don’t trust Harper, I just think he is a bald faced liar. I got 5 bucks that say he changes his tune before the withdrawal date comes around.

  11. Rodney, $5 is it? You’re on! The troops leaving Afghanistan in 2011 is written in stone!

  12. There are many issues – multiculturism, loss of culture, bilingualism costs, 1million+ Ont. gov. workers for 13 million of us, taxation, education – and the war on terrorism. But I will start with balance of reporting at CTV. Canada Am had people from both sides last week, on the kerfuffle at Ottawa University. The questions were not even, the amount of time given was not even, just not an informed discussion at all. And as Rodney VAnder Veer points out, CYV went straight to the Liberal leader, as if to find or create controversay. Just give me the facts and I will make up my own mind!

I can see Canada leaving Soldiers in the sand box, for security and training.

  13. Do you Give a Dam? Canadian Actress Anna Paquin admits her bi-sexuality in new Ad for The True Colors Foundation – Cornwall Ontario – April 2, 2010

    Does God care? His word declares – 1Co 6:9 – 11:

“Don’t you know that evil people won’t have a share in the blessings of God’s kingdom? Don’t fool yourselves! No one who is immoral or worships idols or is unfaithful in marriage or is a pervert or behaves like a homosexual will share in God’s kingdom. Neither will any thief or greedy person or drunkard or anyone who curses and cheats others. Some of you used to be like that. But now the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and the power of God’s Spirit have washed you and made you holy and acceptable to God”.

“Some of you used to be like that…” – not any more! The Lord Jesus Christ came to save his people from their sins, not in their sins. The Lord Jesus said to the woman caught in the act of adultery – Go and sin no more! (John 8:11)

So you see God does care! If He did not, we would all be in Hell by now, suffering the eternal wrath of God due to us for our sins. “God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them!” (John 3:16,17). See God does care!

    Hi Pastor Tom,

A question for you. Why did you post this under Burning Yaks instead of the thread? I’m just curious.

  15. Jamie: I have my computer and home network on certain restrictions for the sack of myself, and my family members.

  16. Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgement you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brothers eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother “let me take the spaeck out of your eye” when there is a log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye and then you can see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

    Matthew 7:1-5

  17. “Does God care?” I have to admit that I am not on a first name basis with God. Nor do I cherry pick from the teachings in holy books to proselytise on His behalf. There are those that do such things, self identifying that they are doing Gods’ work. For some of their views (not mine) you may peruse the attached website from the Westboro Baptist Church whose congregation are particularly noted for boisterouslu picketing certain funerals. Be cautioned that this site is more than a little weird.

  18. Pastor Tom, funny you should bring him up. I was just talking to God and some of his pals the other day. He said, “I left you a bunch of scrolls near the Dead Sea. Read the Gnostic gospels for Christs’ sake. If you don’t learn to speak ancient Hebrew when discussing theology you are a problem child. Loosen up, the ten commandments don’t forbid playing poker, smoking pot or drinking beer. How sinful of you to not take what I give you.” He said more after that but you know how he can drone on. Oh…Gotta go, my bus to paradise is just coming around the corner. See yu.

  19. That’s really curious. The pastor has his computer restricted so he can’t access pages where homosexuality is discussed, so he has to post his anti-homosexual comments on a page that has no mention of the “blocked” subject? Seems pretty complicated to me. How did he see the article in the first place?

  20. Who is judging? in reply to Rodney Vander Veer. God is offering the only sure remedy for sinners that are enslaved to their sinful lifestyles! Have you not read: Luk 19:10 “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost”. or 1Ti 1:15 “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief”.

  21. Yes Pastor Tom, you are the chief sinner….

  22. You do have to wonder about the mental state of someone who seems to be constantly obsessing about the sexuality of others.

  23. In the United States there is a test for mental competency for professionals. If the professional, such as a doctor, has an obsession with sex and religion and is paranoid about all things political, then they may be considered mentally incompetent.

So, Pastor Tom, what do you think about those conservatives?

  24. “there is room at the Saviours’ feet, even for you!”
A lot of people find those feet rather stinky.

  25. Reg: It is like this: I am pro-family and pro-marriage, so sexuality does come to play in those two areas – don’t they? And of course, I mean what the Word of God has to say about family and marriage, since it is God, our Creator who instituted both, and Who has set down the guide lines for both in His Holy Word.

And for politics, I do vote, both as a Canadian and a U.S citizen. I pray for those that are in authority over me as Rom. 13 and 1 Tim.2 commands us. And I do pay my taxes, like ever good Canadian should, so does that make me mentally incompetent? If that is so, then most of everybody who writes on this blog would be considered mentally incompetent too!

Shall I write about religion? I don’t have religion, I have a living relationship with the Risen Lord Jesus Christ! How about you?

  26. Sigfus; sorry you’re not on a first name basis with God. I feel for you and want to help. For ten bucks I can get you on his A party list and whisper your name in his ear. For fifty bucks I can guarantee you everlasting life or double your money back. As for Romans 13, that part was written for slaves. As proof that Jesus spoke english I present the King James version of the bible. I’m accepting donations taped to the underside of the bench in the bus shelter on 2nd and Pitt.

  27. Pal of God – What? you don’t want the standard 10% rip off? You may have a deal as I wouldn’t want to leave all my bases uncovered. One question tho’, how will you recover this donation stuck to all the gum under there. I’ve had opprotunity a few times to view the underside of that bench and it is pretty desperate.

  28. The story of Anna Paquin publicly admitting to her bisexuality reminds me of the news story from a few years back of an openly-gay high school senior who wanted to take her girlfriend to the high school prom. The principal told the girls that all prom couples had to be boy-girl.

This raises the question why, for better or for worse, so many girls are now lesbian or bisexual. Girls today are three times more likely than boys to be non-heterosexual. For most of human history, perhaps 2% of women have been lesbian or bisexual.

Not any more. Recent surveys of teenage girls and young women find that roughly 15% of young females today self-identify as lesbian or bisexual, compared with about 5% of young males who identify as gay or bisexual.

  29. Furtz A Bootbomb you are mistaken – It is not the feet of the Saviour that stinks, it’s your vile sin! Psa. 38:5 “My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness”.

  30. Hey Barn Owl. Maybe it’s because it’s more socially acceptable now than it ever was before. Not that many years ago, it was actually illegal in Canada to be homosexual.

  31. Hilarious! There’s even a bible quote that covers stinky feet! I love it.

  32. Morning all. I see I missed a lot of fun on the weekend. While the Sun of God has risen a few times during that time, I really had a chance to hit the gardens and see the life the sun has brought back to the land. It felt warm on the skin. 😀 Maybe that was the fire I was dancing around too.

  33. “…it was actually illegal in Canada to be homosexual” writes Furtz.. I am so glad God’s moral standards do not change. Canada can degenerate into an a-moral society, but God is still the “same yesterday, today and forever”. Forget God, forsake His absolute standards of right and wrong as revealed in His Holy Scriptures and what happens? The Word of God is not silent on this matter:

“So God let these people go their own way. They did what they wanted to do, and their filthy thoughts made them do shameful things with their bodies. They gave up the truth about God for a lie, and they worshiped God’s creation instead of God, who will be praised forever. Amen. God let them follow their own evil desires. Women no longer wanted to have sex in a natural way, and they did things with each other that were not natural. Men behaved in the same way. They stopped wanting to have sex with women and had strong desires for sex with other men. They did shameful things with each other, and what has happened to them is punishment for their foolish deeds”(Rom. 1:24-27).

Forsake God, and God forsakes you -“They did shameful things with each other, and what has happened to them is punishment for their foolish deeds”. Sin has its own build in punishment, but also when God removes His restraining hand of grace, a nation will run head long into destruction. Self – destruction first, than the visible wrath of God comes upon what is left. A nation, a person, anyone who rejects God’s authority will not go unpunished. God’s holy nature, the Just One demands that every sin be punished. Back to the fact that God’s nature does not change. He is holy, and He will always be holy, and He will always demand holiness from His creatures. It is a fearful thing to fall into hands of the Living God! The God of Heaven, the God of mercy, the God who is love!

“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people”. Pro 14:34 The solution is not lowering the standards, but come to God’s solution – the Lord Jesus Christ. In repentance and faith in Him alone. He will give you a new heart and a new life in order that you might love His standard and want to live for His glory and honour.

  34. Pastor Tom: Are you ccing the Vatican?

  35. Yo, Grimalot. It was a lovely weekend for sure. We celebrated Bunny-Day in the garden as well. We should all be enjoying the little time left to us. It seems that out fair land is about to be self-destroyed. I’m shaking in my boots, aren’t you?

  36. “god is the same yesterday, today, and forever”. Really? So god NEVER supported slavery and segregation? And god ALWAYS supported women’s rights? The christian church was NEVER racist or sexist? EVER? Wake up, my friend. As society becomes more accepting, so does your god. Some christian churches are now even accepting homosexuals as members! It’s only a matter of time and god will change his mind again.

  37. Barn Owl, I’m going to extend my credibility and suggest that the rise in homosexuality is world wide and due in part to a change in water chemistry. I suggest that since 1959 all water today contains a measurable amount of estrogen in it where it never did before. This is due to the birth control pill.

  38. ““So God let these people go their own way. 1:24-27).”

Is that the Romans that wrote that excerpt? The same Romans that enjoyed frolicking with the same sex, and even with little boys? The same Romans that Constantine represented when this whole farce of a bible story was written in the first place? Awesome!!!

  39. I’m not shaking in my boots Furtz, never did, never will. I have seen the true way. But again, I did immensely enjoy my weekend. I should have danced “nekkid” around the fire though, for added effect! 😀

You know what sucks, remember when we were young, that the chocolate bunnies were solid and good tasting chocolate instead of all this crappy hollow stuff we get these days. Talk about commercialization of religious festivities. Again, all in the name of the “The Good Book” and to the profit of someone else.

  40. Oh gees, Pal of God. Don’t get the pastor going on birth control.

  41. There must be a decent chocolate shoppe in the area that sells real chocolate. On the other hand, cheap hollow chocolate bunnies probably best reflect the “spirit” of the holy day. Those Laura Secord eggs are still pretty good, but I’m not sure if they are Jesus approved. Should check with the pastor on that. There’s gotta be a bible passage that deals with chocolate bunnies and eggs.

  42. Pal of God, it was felt at one time that municipal fluoridation of the drinking water was very dangerous. As a result, the City of Montreal did not fluoridate its drinking water. In the movie DOCTOR STRANGELOVE, filmed at the height of the Cold War, one of the characters believes that fluoridation was a Soviet plot to suck out his bodily fluids and destroy his very essence. It’s for this reason that he singlehandedly starts a nuclear war.

Furtz A Bootbomb, you’re certainly right about homosexuality being more socially acceptable in contemporary society. But what I find interesting is how this reality plays itself out differently in terms of gender.

Female sexuality is different from male sexuality. If a straight boy kissed another boy, perhaps to amuse some girls who might be watching, he would be unlikely to undergo a change in sexual orientation as a result.

But, sexual attraction in many women seems to be more malleable. If a teenage girl kisses another teenage girl, for whatever reason, and she finds that she likes it – then things can happen, and things can change. If a young woman finds her soulmate, and her soulmate happens to be female, then she may begin to experience feelings she’s never felt before.

  43. Barn Owl, Maybe it’s just because girls are nicer and easier to like. I think if I was a female, I might be a gay, because I really like women. Make sense?

  44. nyscof……I’m willing to bet that you are a raw milk advocate and a member of the ARA.

  45. Reg, nyscof probably drinks Guiness and is a member of the IRA.

  46. Hate to change the topic, but….

Anyone hear Hamid Karzai’s comments about Western involvement in Afghanistan? Well, just a few days after Obama went and paid a visit, Karzai made a statement accusing the UN of interfering with elections, and treating him like a “puppet regime”. He also threatened that if the US didn’t back off he would ditch them and work with the Taliban.

Anyone familiar with American history knows where this goes next. Karzai either gets assassinated, or exiled. The smear campaign against him has already started, with MSNBC doing a piece insinuating that he is on drugs.

Americans hate it when governments don’t do what they’re told, and don’t tolerate insubordination. Karzai is done…guaranteed.
