Cornwall ON – The Cornwall Community Police Service will be holding its’ annual Spring Seatbelt Campaign from April 14th to the 24th, 2010. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of wearing seat belts as well as using child car and booster seats.
Any driver or passenger who is 16 years of age and older convicted of failing to use or improperly using a seatbelt will be subject to a $240.00 fine. Drivers will also be subject to two demerit points.
All motor vehicle drivers in Ontario are responsible for ensuring that all children under 16 years of age are properly secured in a seat belt or an appropriate child car seat or booster seat. Children can start using a seatbelt once the child turns eight or at least 36 kg. or is 145 centimetres tall.
Police report that a properly used child seat can reduce the risk of injury in a crash by 75 per cent. Wearing your seat belt properly will dramatically increase your chance of surviving a motor vehicle collision.
Transport Canada reports that for every one per cent increase in seat belt usage, five lives in Canada are saved. Since seat belts were made mandatory, the number of people killed and injured in collisions in Ontario has steadily dropped.
Target enforcement will be conducted throughout the city during the ten day blitz.
