Cornwall ON – There was exciting Federal Hockey League (FHL) action Saturday night at the Turtle Dome.
The Akwesasne Warriors defeated The New York Aviators 6-4 with another victory on home ice! The Warriors who played back to back games Friday and Saturday night have now extended their winning streak to 5 games!
Pierre Dagenais (10 goals, 9 assist in 6 games) opened up the scoring with a power-play goal, and he also got an assist on Miguel Delisle’s game winning goal late in the second period. Delisle scored his second goal of the night at 18:41 of the third period – an important insurance goal – as New York was ready to pull their goalie to try and tie the game. Patrick Deraspe and Alain Quenneville both got a pair of assist.
There was a scary moment in the game when Quenneville got hit in the face with a puck. Head Coach Mike Piquette and Quenneville’s team mates on the bench were not happy with a slow whistle by the referee to stop the play. Quennville got repairs, and returned to action. He almost scored a Mike Cammalleri style goal (on one knee) late in the second period.
There was an entertaining fight late in the second period. New York’s Angelo Serse snowed Akwesasne goalie Nicholas Filion after a nice save. Drew Baker took exception to this and defended his goalie. Serse came out swinging hard, but Baker found his one-two punch and won the fight knocking Serse to the ice. The 800 people in attendance were ecstatic cheering loudly!
Akwesasne goalie Nicholas Filion looked a little shaky at first, but he found his game and his glove hand, and he was perfect in the third period. He stopped 36 of 40 New York shots. Both New York and Akwesasne went 2 for 7 on the power play.
