Mountain ON- Seaway DHS will officially launch “Farm-to-School” in SDG on June 21st .The school is hosting a special breakfast featuring local food for students, in partnership with Healthy Eating for Better Learning Student Nutrition Program, All Things Food SDG Community Food Network, and Growing Up Organic.
Farm-to-School programs connect students with local food, through activities such as local food events, salad bar programs, educational farm and farmer visits, school gardens, and other activities promoting local, healthy food.
The Farm-to-School breakfast will support local, sustainable producers in SD&G, and raise awareness in regards to incorporating local healthy food into school food. The breakfast will feature a local menu of pancakes made with locally ground flour, and all locally produced fresh berries, maple syrup, eggs and organic dairy products. The products will come from local SDG food producers such as the Upper Canada Flour Mill, Barkley’s Orchards, and Farmhouse Organic. Students, school staff and volunteers will be in charge of serving the food.
After the breakfast, several classes will be participating in a farm visit to a local organic farm, Waratah Downs, with Growing Up Organic. The school plans to run a Farm-to-School event once a month the following school year.
