Question
.
The cost of fuel is steadily increasing. How much fuel does a big jet use? Asked by Colin.
Answer
Of course the bigger the airplane, more fuel it is going to use. Also the airplane weight has a significant influence on the fuel consumption. An airplane like a Boeing B767, that can carry 200 to 300 passengers, will burn approximately two litres of jet fuel per second. Imagine a two litter soft drink bottle. The airplane will burn that much jet fuel every second of the flight. For example, on a five hour flight to a vacation destination in Mexico, that is, 18,000 (5×3,600) seconds times two litres per second, or 36,000 litres of jet fuel.
