Liberal candidate for SD&SG calls out Conservative Jim McDonell on Nursing Comment – Challenges him to One on One Debate Without Notes! September 23, 2011

CFN – An incensed Mark A MacDonald has challenged one of his opponents to a one on one debate after alleged comments from PC candidate Jim McDonell reached him related to the debate in Winchester Thursday night.

The debate featured questions from the crowd directed at up to two of the candidates which for the most part were directed at Liberal candidate MacDonald and Mr. McDonell.

The issue stemmed from Mr. MacDonald calling Mr. McDonell on the question of nurses who had lost their jobs.

Mr. MacDonald has issued a challenge to Mayor McDonell to face him off in a one on one debate:

I’m prepared to take on Jim McDonell in an actual debate.  Any time, any place, and without notes!

The reference to the notes Mr. MacDonald explained was that he felt at Mayor McDonell had been sticking to scripts as he visibly is reading from sheets of paper at most of their exchanges.

We at The Cornwall Free News are prepared to video and moderate the debate at the location and time of choice by Mayor McDonell if he wishes to accept the challenge.   What do you think?  Should these two have an actual debate on the issues as opposed to the trading of barbs that has taken place at most of the “debates” so far?

  1. Should they have an actual debate with CFN moderating? Yes, absolutely they should. I have been saying in post after post that Mayor McDonell would fail Communications 101 because he reads his speeches and fails to engage his audience.

  2. Mark has made minced meat out of him in every debate so far because McDonnell keeps mumbling….bumbling…talking under his breath and generally giving weazeley answers. He is flubbing his every chance at answering a question and coming off as extremely cowardly every time he resorts to name-calling and smears.

I’m not surprised Mark Macdonald wants a one on one debate but it’s not a fair debate to have a battle of wits with an unarmed man.

  3. Do the debates really matter? We saw Mr. Lauzon get an even higher percentage of the vote after he was soundly beaten in every debate by Bernadette Clement during the federal election. We saw NDP candidates getting elected without ever visiting the riding they were running in.

Maybe we need a cage MMA match, winner takes all. Mc would be out in the first minute and then the real battle would be between the Mac’s.

  4. Good point, Reg. In any case, debate is a misnomer for stand up and rant, or sit down and drone. True debating is a declining art, like letter writing.

  5. This site lists reductions and consolidations by the current government, Cornwall only has a few on page 4.

I did not see alot of script reading in this video, I did see Mark Mac provide less information during his responses just to attack the Conservatives. Really, are either of these guys going to be in the front row at Queen’s Park anyway?

Just heard that Mcguinty has silenced muncipalities by not allowing them to stop wind farms being put up. That removes the voice of the people I imagine, but will have to search for this one.

  6. As a life long Conservative my feeling is that so long as their are no realistic or rational attempts to reach the under 28 crowd it’s safe to go ahead and debate pre-determined, safe and sanitized subjects. Conservatives will swim through a river of fire to vote. The friends of the opposition have zero discipline. Politicians are terrified of youth and where youth live. Pharmaceutically pumped up seniors and sycophantic squares will carry the day with their stoned out paxil/valium fueled illusions. So go ahead, debate all you like. You’ve already lost. The headlines are printed. Run Jesus if you want.

  7. @Reg…I think the debates do matter. How a candidate fairs in a debate certainly helps me allocate my vote.

  8. Yes, and we read in the weekend newspaper of how Mark MacDonald was really mad at Jim McDonell for calling Dalton McGuinty a liar! Mark demanded that Jim apologize to Dalton for that remark. Everyone knows that the Tax Man doesn’y lie!

  9. Purely from a strategic standpoint I think Mr. McDonell is wise to say very little. For those who do not agree with Mr. MacDonald, the more he says and rants the more he takes himself out of the race. The people who love his banter were going to vote for him before the race even started.

  10. Someone please tell me how you can get people working??

We need a product and a market there is none at the moment

  11. Yes smee, then you need people who want to work….
